| #1arakisDec 18, 2009 5:38:16 | Thi article seem good and interesting. However, I'm quite worried about the interaction between the cast afar the spirit and the swift familiar feats. Whit this simple combo, a 4th level arcane character (or a 6th level MC into arcane) can teleport 5 for free every odd round. Is it really intended to work? Is it not prone to abuse? |
| #2CraggleRockDec 18, 2009 6:10:08 | Thi article seem good and interesting. The combination would allow the player to teleport only their familiar five squares; perhaps you misread cast afar the spirit missing the "you can teleport it up to 5 squares" (empahasis mine). |
| #3astartesdominaDec 18, 2009 8:26:20 | I am so tempted to horribly abuse the Familiar Mount ritual for humorous purposes. It's Crok in the lead, riding his pet Gelatinous Cube, followed closely by Sveta on the Beholderling, and Red Tom riding the Disembodied Hand! Garkus brings up the rear upon the big....eyeball.... |
| #4arakisDec 18, 2009 8:54:24 | I am still convict that there is some way to abuse it... hummm.... Free teleport for the familiar at low tier... |
| #5DanTrackerDec 18, 2009 10:25:00 | i feel one of the biggest missing elements of familiars is the familiar actually casting spells. as the cantrips are supposedly the most basic, yet fundamental elements of casting, why wouldn't an opening feat for familiars be that they can learn cantrips and cast them from their location while in active mode? then, having learned the cantrips, familiars could begin to learn more spells and rituals. i do particularly like that this article talked about the relationship of familiar to arcane caster being one of increased equality. i haven't played a caster with familiar in 4e nor previous editions. it just seemed useless most of the time. i had better things to spend feats on. but, having seen that way that NPCs can get abused and treated as slaves, it was nice to see that included in this article. the subtle mentioning that not every element of the game outside of one's own character is meant to be 'used' as a tool and ignored when not being useful. |
| #6cmdlukeDec 18, 2009 12:46:37 | I am so tempted to horribly abuse the Familiar Mount ritual for humorous purposes. Agreed. I can't wait to make my book imp a mount, then make him invisible and fly around on him. =) |
| #7yaldabaothDec 18, 2009 13:33:46 | I am so tempted to horribly abuse the Familiar Mount ritual for humorous purposes. The Gelatinous Cube is the best. Dissolvin' the precious grain stores. Fine rugs. Slippers. Clothing. Lace. Saddles. Thatched Roofs. Food. Important Parchments. Armor Straps. Whips. Winter firewood. Slings. Fur coats. Bows. Wooden Walls & Doors. Pipeweed. Spellbooks. If it's dead & organic, you can deny it to people who want it... unless they pay your price. Would hair or horns count? "Now that you are helpless, you will wear my sloppy crown of shame!" And it's also invisible when you ride (glide? slide?) it into town. |
| #8ff6shadowDec 18, 2009 14:30:19 | Hm . . .the feat that gives them a teleport speed . . .isn't there a mount item that lets you teleport when the mount does? |
| #9askanipsionDec 19, 2009 0:43:06 | Really disappointed the powers are wizard only - was hoping they could be taken by anyone having a familiar really annoyed that wizards are getting tons of support while bards & sorcerers have gotten very little I like the new familiars though and the new ritual though i can see it becoming very abused |
| #10MirtekDec 19, 2009 20:55:09 | Well, I am pretty disappointed by this article because it all ne powers are wizard powers, yet wizards are neither the only ones being able to have an arcane familiar nor are they in any way inherently more likely to have them. If there were an article about casting spells with daggers I would understand if it focuses more on sorcerers and swordmages, since although any arcane caster could take the arcane implement proficiency (dagger) feat, these two are inherently more likely to use a dagger for spellcasting since they get it for free. Yet arcane familiar is something that each arcane class has to be take seperately, no class get's it as part of their class features or anything like this. A wizard is no more likely to have an familiar than a swordmage, sorcerer, or warlock. So the article's power selection should really be more class neutral. |

Totally agree - Wizards seem to be getting new stuff every month and sorcerers have really been let out except for the small article this month. I think they should have set it up like the Cut Throat/Bravo MC feats are - as long as you have a familiar then you can choose them. |
| #12LifeVirusDec 20, 2009 16:58:46 |
Actually they might...if you read the last paragraph before the powers are listed.
Note the bolded text, my best bet is we'll have a sorcerer based familiar powers/feats later on. |
| #13CailteDec 20, 2009 21:48:49 | The familiars themselves seem to be the biggest problems in the article aside from Circle of Protection which is not sure if it is a Level 9 Daily power or a level 10 Utility (Daily). The Air Elemental lacks a restriction on the size of things it can move. Similarly the Tiny Gelatinous Cube's "Cleaning" power is way over the top. That aside I really like the powers in this article, even if my Sorcerer, Bard, and Swordmage characters all missed out on new power options. |
| #14DanTrackerDec 21, 2009 6:55:15 | ... after it consumes, what does it do with the remains? |
| #15guangDec 29, 2009 10:06:21 | ... umm......defecates them somewhere? Or maybe it just gets slightly bigger for awhile, and there are no remains. |
