My D&D group and I have been waiting for the D&D table top. But now we never hear any thing about it. When I look up the news the last article about it was 6-6-08? Are you kidding me. I like the character builder but you really don't need it. Where is the table top? It's the only thing that stands out.

My second question is whats with logging into the site and then being ask to log into the forums and then being asked your secret question? What is this the 90's

Thanks for any help.

http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=maptool gets a lot of "use this; it is great!" posts. I've never used it, but it seems pretty solid and covers the list of things that the D&D table top tool is aiming to do.

Regarding Wizards' tool, it is delayed indefinitely. They still plan to release it, but I guess they hit some problems and are reworking some things. There will be a good bit of fanfare when they do reannounce it, I am sure.

Your DDI account is not the forums account (you can actually link several forum accounts, or at least forum names, to one account). I don't know about the secret question; I've not seen that yet... perhaps you haven't logged in a long enough time gap or the account had a number of failed access hits against it?

Incorrect, they actually haven't said anything about it. No information has been released.

Umm...not quite.
The last "official" word (from a WotC employee on the DDI forums), was that they realized they got in too deep, and have "postponed things until they can better evaluate their situation", then decide whether or not to procede with the features promised.

Of course, the above is paraphrased. If you search the DDI threads further down, there is much discussion on this topic.

Ultimately, they've got to be looking at the fact they're making this thing, which the plan was to give for free to existing DDI subscribers. It costs money to make, money to maintain. They've presumably got market research showing that they can't increase DDI subscription costs, they've probably also got market research showing they're unlikely to lose many subscribers for not releasing the product*, so they have to be wondering what they possibly have to gain from putting more money into finishing it.

It's a business reality that has sad consequences for us players.

* The person who signs up to a subscription service based on the promise of future content available at some undetermined time is unlikely to be wise enough to cancel that service if the content never arrives.

RPTools is pretty awesome.

I don't see how much better an official (commercial) one is going to be compared to hardcore hobbyists making their own with precisely what they feel they need. They'd need significant investment, and frankly WotC isn't exactly a software company. If they were more programmer oriented we'd have 90% less rule debates/discussions.

MapTool is so powerful and deep that they would be foolish to reinvent it. They should be more interested in striking a deal with RPTools and making it their official tool. Not sure how the deal would go but perhaps a sum of money paid from WoTC to RPTools in order to slap their brand on the tool and have some creative input to it's construction.

That is very disapointing news and if it is true then they truly suck. What a let down.

Yes, you are right about that. But anything directly about the VTT hasn't been released... which I guess is what I was getting at. And much discussion is a severe understatement my friend. :D

I doubt the RPTools devs would go for it, honestly. One of the largest aims of the project is to be system-agnostic, free, and open.

I wouldn't blame them if they decided that the money was really good, or anything, but if I were them, any arrangement with WotC would be a nonexclusive "WotC, you're allowed to use this, but we don't work for you and you don't get to tell us how we do our thing."
