Fixing Monster Math Manually via MB

Great work on the new format, but the monsters from before mm3 have the same old math. However, with the mm3 monsters, the devs put their numbers in manually, and set them to low damage output to get them to match the numbers in the book.

I have noticed though if you tell the MB to reset the modifiers to the normal number and set the attack to medium, it comes out with exactly what the damage as it appears in MM3.

So all we have to do with pre-existing monsters, is

1)reset the custom modifiers on the attack
2) change the attack to medium (for at-wills, normal scale attacks, etc)

and suddenly we have Old mm1/mm2 era monsters with mm3 attacks.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Do recall that it's more than attacks that are different.  The original Elites and Solos had higher defenses and HP as well, making them tougher to kill, but less in the way of a "berserk button," boosting their damage when bloodied.

I dont use the monster builder that often.  how do you reset the attack modifiers?

I can easily change the damage from light to normal.

The inherent math for attacks/damage/etc still seems to consist of the pre-errata values. Apart from damage, brutes default to level + 3 vs AC attacks, for example, regardless of whether they're old ones, MM3 ones, or newly-created.

Fixing the math will be problematic until those base values are updated. At the very least it will mean having to set every value by hand to what it should be according to the new standards.

That's my point. You don't have to do it by hand. if you just create a copy of the monster in mb, reset the modifiers with the little swirly button and set it to medium damage, it becomes what the new math should be. They have programed the July update math into the MB. It is the basis of the "Medium" setting for an attack.

And his point is that you do have to make the corrections by hand, which I have just confirmed myself.  The MB still uses level +3 for brute attacks vs AC.  If you open up a MM3 brute and "reset" its attacks, it's attack rolls will drop by 2 points.

Yes it appears the attack mods are still set to the old base. I tried changing a soldier and it was adding +7 vs AC (as per the old DMG p184 design level) rather than the new +5 vs AC standard for all monsters.

Edit: The damage ratings of all the new MM3 creatures are set to 'low'. I've yet to find anything with a medium or high damage attack.

I know you are right, but where is the new to-hit standard written?
I know the new damage came out in the errata.

I seem to be blind...where is this magical reset swirly button?  I got a whole scales of war to update the monsters on >.>

The new attack (and other) values were also in the July errata.

I have the July errata right here and I only see the New damage table.
But I could be blind.
Would you be kind enough to give me a page number?

Is the use of "Medium" setting correct though? All of the MM3 monsters that I've seen so far use the "low" setting.

For example, the Yeti Rampager has a claw attack of +10 vs AC, 1d6+6 (average damage of 9). This is on the "low" setting and fits the damage from the MM3 book. A medium damage setting puts it up to 2d6+5 (average damage of 12),  much higher than the MM3 book.

An equivalent level 5 skirmisher from an older source, the Hippogriff from MM1 has a bite of +8 vs AC, 2d6+5 (average damage 12). The attack modifier is wrong as all creatures should now be level+5 vs AC, so this can easily be amended. The damage on that creature is set to "high" though, even though it's equivalent to the "medium" setting on the Yeti.

If I delete the damage on the Hippogriff altogether by changing it to "none" and back to "normal", then the "high" setting now becomes 3d6+2 - still an average damage of 12. The "medium" setting is 2d6+2 (average of 9), which is the same as the "low" setting of the Yeti. Is this as it should be?

Another Level 5 skirmisher, the Dire Wolf has an attack of +10 vs AC, 1d8+4 (average damage 8), this is on the "low" setting and is around the same average as the MM3 yeti. If I change it to "medium" it becomes 2d8+2 (average 11), this time higher than a MM3 equivalent monster.

Overall, I'm not sure that just setting the monsters to "medium" will give the correct result, though I do find it rather confusing as to what changes (if any) should be made to the older monsters.

If you reset the mods, medium is correct. What they did for the mm3 monsters is set them all to low and manually adjust the modifiers. If you reset them and set them to med, you should get the new damage expressions exactly.

I wish they would spend a week or 3 updating all of the monsters in the monster Builder that came out before MM3. It would make every GM's life much easier.
