Ecology of the Genasi (setting neutral article)

Question 1:
This article gives a lot of flavor to elemental power, and presumably the elemental power source as well. My first thought on reading it was how great this flavor could be for DL's primal sorcerers. Do you agree that Elemental power, as described herein, is a good fit for DL sorcerers?? Would you consider nixing the Arcane sorcerer in favor of an Elemental controller of some sort? How else could or should Elemental power of this sort be present on Krynn?

Question 2:
Pretty much every odd-but-interesting race or class that one allows into a DL campaign comes standard with an "Okay, But It's Very Rare" clause. Having said that, what would you do if one of your player's really wanted to play a genasi character in a DL campaign? One of my newer players wants a character that can turn into stone or into molten lava (creative!). Sounds like an earthsoul genasi with a secondary fire manifestation, yeah? Any ideas on how I could make such a character fit DL?

My personal opinion is that this race does not suit well for the atmoshpere of Krynn. I don't think that new races should be introduced to DL. Genasi is perfectly fine for FR or maybe to Dark Sun. Krynn does not have so strong connection to the elemntal powers as Athas.

Yeah, I think that'd be the general consensus on genasi. But I guess I'm asking about the exception to the rule. It's for a first time D&D player, afterall. Or you absolutely wouldn't make an exception?

Any other thoughts on either question?

I'd say it's rare, but if your player wants to do it, make him a refugee from Athas with amnesia - one of a kind on Krynn, cut off from his people, culture, memory etc - he'll be a freak wherever he goes and suitably treated as one

Does the player want to be a wizard? Perhaps he was human until he took the test of high sorcery.

So, you mean the changing from human to genasi is the result of the test? It's an interesting idea. With this I think it would be imaginable but I wouldn't allow these kind of extremeties more than once.

Yes. Like Raistlin had his side-effects from the test. Granted it only works if he wants to be a wizard. Also if the genasi dies permanently, I'd had a little hard time believing another genasi happening to show up if the player still wanted to play a genasi.

I have not meant just another genasi. If the DM allows under these circumstances then so be it. But I wouldn't allow for example a thre-kreen psion refugee from Dark Sun besides the genasi.

Furthermore, if this the result of the test then the character should have some drawbacks from it, not just simply changing to genasi.

Does it? Maybe after the test (and the resulting change in physiology), he decides he'd rather not be try to be a wizard.

THANKS for the ideas and responses everyone! :D

My first thought is, I'm not sure that would work in DL. Failing the Test pretty much spells death. Things may be easing up a little with the need for new recruits, but it'd be rare next to never occurring to commit to taking it and then decide not to be a wizard after passing. I guess, oh goodness, which one was it...Ariakas(?) did that, sort of. I mean, there are wizards like him who Test and then don't stay all that close to the Orders of High Sorcery (continents to conquer and all that), but to just not be a wizard at all after passing the Test...?

On the other hand, that might be a really interesting story. It certainly raises a lot of questions. What would you do with the wizard's powers?? Also, why have the character so marked by magic and then not pursue it anymore? I dunno.

What about genasi as a(nother) race spawned by Chaos? Just, you know, ones that weren't quite so warped by the angry fire giant manifestation and all that jazz. :P (They got the happy genes, like kender.) There could be one small place somewhere with a village of genasi living in isolation.

Ooooo......what about genasi as progeny of the SCIONS?!!!!!

See, and that brings me to my other question about sorcerers. Don't you think the flavor fits well together? Primal sorcerers and 4e elemental power?
