Except, of course, that he was at one point a PC.

I'd go with Wizard/Warlock, myself. He started out as a wizard in that he focused on the staff and had the stereotypical wizard frailty issue, so while he technically formed a pact before finishing the Test of High Magic (if I recall the exact circumstances correctly), flavor-wise he'd be a better Wizard/Warlock than Warlock/Wizard.

Interesting concept, except he has never demonstrated an eldritch blast.

Actually, technically, Raistlin still is a PC. Check the module Dragons of Autumn, he's there as a premade character. He's also either in Dragons of Winter or Spring.

As for the pact with Fistandantilus, going by 3.5 rules since that's what I know, I would say it would be more like him being a Binder with a pact with Fistandantilus' vestige. Since he's only ever shown that one binding, I would suggest that it be a special ability he is given, rather than taking a level in the class.

Why would he? I never said he paragon multiclassed into warlock, which he'd have to do to get Eldritch Blast. Wizard/Warlock, not Warlock/Wizard.

I know he is, but Darth_Caffeineus said he'd be a NPC in 4e, and I was pointing out that even if that were true, he would still have been a PC, so considering the question would still be valid.

Well, this is technically the 4e Dragonlance forum. ;) Besides, if this were 3e, the "Pact with Fistandantilus -> Warlock" thing wouldn't have come up at all; Raistlin would just be a straight wizard, possibly with some PrCs in there.

Well, it isn't under the "Previous Editions" subforum, and technically any threads not in that forum are de facto 4e unless otherwise specified. It's a matter of semantics, though, so it's kind of irrelevant at this point.

Don't you think Raistlin would be a little higher than 4th level The man was thiis close to becoming a god for petes sake
And Raistlin travelled back in time to a point after he and Fist made that pact. Hence the quote" I see you recognize me at last, so much for the body waiting for you in the futre" Raislin to Fistandantilus in War of the Twins.

If you were to stick with the stories though, his con should be like a 6 or 5. Half the time he survived not because of his body but because of his will. If he were in a campaign I was running, I would give the player the time seeing eyes, a bonus to spellcasting, and the hit to the con to give him a 6. However, as shown by his lvl 30 aspect, he probably overcame the physical affliction through magic, and dropped the "feat" or whatever it might be.

Maybe, but I thought the tea he drank helped him so I would say his initial Con would be a 9 and towards the end of the day or after a physical confrontation a 5 or a 6. Tough to say though.

I'd have to agree that after his test of High Sorcery, the Pact Initiate feat would be appropriate. Of course, to really represent Raistlin as PC in 4e, you'd really need some homebrew powers and/or feats. (Just to cover the golden skin - resistance and hourglass vision, for example).

(Note: When he goes back and 'absorbs' Fistandantilus in the past, there is a bit of merging of their personalities. It wears off over time (and it completely gone after his death/abyss time), but for a long while, Fisty still intrudes on Rasitlins thoughts/memories/abilites, albiet this time as a 'second personality' rather than a 'mentor entitiy'.)
(Also, due to him absorbing Fisty, his body was toughened and he was give much more health, so a big increase in CON during those times makes sense.)

I already thought about converting the main DragonLance characters to 4e. It really isn't that hard.

Raistlin is obviously a human wizard, but I don't think giving him the Staff of Defense feature would work, as it's based on Constitution, and that's definitely the score where I put Raistlin's 8. Instead, I was willing to make a slight twist to the rules as written and give him the Wand of Accuracy class feature, while leaving him the Staff of Magius as his implement. Otherwise, he ends up with an implement power that he cannot use. I have him multiclassed as a (Dark) Warlock, to represent his pact with Fistandantilus, which also gives him a source for his Thievery training. Even though he gets that training long before his Test in the story, the end result is the same.

Raistlin is a Staff wizard MC'd into Vestige Pact Warlock. This requires him to have Constitution secondary. However, he is supposed to be frail and sickly.

THEREFORE...

In exchange for being allowed to possess the Staff of Magius, his DM afflicted him with permanent Mummy Rot, with the caveat that it cannot ever kill him, and that the necrotic damage it deals can be healed normally as soon as he makes a successful Endurance check. A subsequent failed Endurance check once again deals unhealable damage, which remains until another successful check is made.

There is a Raistlin build in D&D character builder. According to that, he is a level 11 human wizard.

Anyway, I don't think Raistlin could be described well with 4e rules. There are healing surges as we all know, and it is hard to me to imagine that Raist sits for 15 or 20 minutes after a fight, spends 3-4 healing surges and he is at full HP.

The idea that he multiclassed into warlock is also very hard to imagine, but this is also my personal opinion. He is a true wizard. I don't really remember what wizard paragon paths are in 4e, but I know that he should be at epic level, and his epic destiny should be arhmage without question. This is of course after he took over the Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas.

I have to say, as soon as I saw the Vestige Pact Warlock I thought of Raistlin.

All the discussion above is just another reason to treat 4E abilities as abstract numbers that don't represent any noticeable quality of the character; characters are as strong, smart, or intelligent as you roleplay them and they have six flavours of karma that invisibly influence their combat effectiveness.

Actually, he's stated as a level 6 wizard.

So far, it looks as though Wizard considers him to be a full fledged wizard. His deal with Fist would probably be a background sort of thing. Probably an ability that allows for an extra encoutner and daily ability, probably some sort of will defense bonus as well. Much cleaner than trying to multiclass him and forcing it to work when it doesn't.

Paragon class he's probably an Academy Master (Dragon 374) and epice is most easily Archmage. His magic items are a bit hard, but he probably has things that enhance his meager defenses and his uses of encounter and daily abilities. You might also make a paragon class based on his robes, but thus far this is what I'd put him as.

 EDIT:

It shoudl be noted that Szass Tam is a level 30 elite artillery. It's also worth pointing out that Raistlin can cast meteor swarm, so chances are he's level 30. It would make sense I suppose. Most high level characters like that are probably going to be around 28-30 in game terms. Simbul's a bit harder because supposedly she's stronger than the others by a bit, but I'm not sure if that's just because she's a sorcerer or if that power was in fact lost to a degree when Mystra fell (she gave her that power).

I agree with Mith.  Raistlin's been around since 2E, and never once has he been described as anything other than a wizard.  Warlocks, or at least something close to them, have been around ever since that time and were never used in any edition to describe him (see PO:SM in 2E and Complete Arcane in 3.5).  The "pact" with Fist seems more like a possession than any type of warlock-style pact.   Fistandantilus was never Raistlin's patron in the sense that he gave Raistlin the ability to do magic without the need for book learning.  Raistlin still needed to learn spells, use a spellbook.

Think about either binders or vestige warlocks.  The arcane character has to summon them from a myriad set of possible vestiges at any given time.  In 3rd edition this was done ritualistically, in 4th it is more fluidly built into the class.

Rather, think of Fistandantilus (as depicted in Dragons of the Hourglass Mage, for instance), as giving Raistlin an immediate level boost.  Once possessed, Raist can cast wizard spells, but they're much higher level than he would otherwise be able to cast.  Once Fist leaves, Raistlin's somewhat depowered, and then has to continue advancing through his own gumption.  Making him be a wizard/warlock tries to peg him down mechanically when he was never meant to exist in the present system that way.

Fistandantilus was a lich (demilich in the old parlance) who managed to possess a young wizard through means of a spell, nothing more.  If we're going to get hung up on what we've seen Raistlin be able and not be able to do, I'm pretty sure he once cast Knock without taking 10 minutes to do so.

I'll keep that in mind once I subscribe to the D&D Insider because it would be quite interesting to emulate Raistlin Majere in a future adventure. ;)
