| #1silvanthalasMar 01, 2008 11:32:27 | If this book comes out in July, do not buy it, as it is not written by Weis and Hickman. |
| #2kalstrandMar 01, 2008 13:31:41 | Where exactly does this information come from? |
| #3carteeg_struve_dupMar 01, 2008 13:48:47 | Here is Tracy Hickman's post from the Dragonlance Nexus:Well, we wish truth were happier... and to verify Margaret's position: I want to emphasize that Tracy speaks for both us. Here is a link to the thread. I would highly appreciate it if Wizards would clarify their stance on this issue. |
| #4Eternal_OutlawMar 01, 2008 23:47:56 | If this book is not released by Weis and Hickman then I will be very disappointed. I have been a huge Magic player and SW Minis collector over the years and I will not buy anymore Magic or Star Wars products from WOTC if Weis and Hickman's version is not released. I will continute to support the DragonLance line because I don't want them to find a way to justify canceling DragonLance because it isn't supported. I have purchased up to 5 boxes of Magic cards for a single set and up to 4 cases of Star Wars minis for a set. I know that is still a drop in the ocean but my loyality to my favorite books and authors is too huge to support other departments of the place messing with it. |
| #5bigmacMar 02, 2008 8:32:39 | Where exactly does this information come from? The other half of this information is that companies like Amazon are already taking pre-orders for Dragons of the Hourglass Mage. Some people have speculated that WotC have hired a ghost writer to do an alternate version of the book. However, this could be a case of one part of WotC blocking the manuscript and not telling the sales department not to promise to sell the book to Amazon. I hope that someone from the WotC staff surfs past and actually says what their problem with the book is. |
| #6kalstrandMar 02, 2008 13:39:49 | Well I would think WotC would be in some serious trouble if they list Weis and Hickman as the authors and it was in fact written by someone else. I guess we'll have to see what happens. It is possible that Wizards had it scheduled for a July release and amazon and other places picked up the date and set it in their schedule and Wizards changed it but amazon never did. Right now the DDM Icons Orcus and Dracolich can still be found on amazon even though they have both been dropped or delayed by Wizards. |
| #7gamer_zer0Mar 03, 2008 18:38:12 | Hi All. I received the following information to pass along. I apologize for not posting it earlier, but I am still out of the office from D&D Experience: Wizards of the Coast planned to release Dragons of the Hourglass Mage in July 2008, as published in our catalog and posted on Amazon and other sites for pre-order. Despite our efforts, a manuscript was not forthcoming. Plans for the book are on hold; we have not recommissioned it. Today, we communicated this news to our distributor, and we expect that within the coming week retailers taking pre-orders for this book will cancel those orders. We are always disappointed when our business partners don’t honor their obligations to us, but we must move forward to ensure the continued success of our publishing business. |
| #8bigmacMar 03, 2008 18:48:32 | Hi All. I received the following information to pass along. I apologize for not posting it earlier, but I am still out of the office from D&D Experience: I don't understand. Does "business partners" mean Amazon or the authors? Tracy Hickman has said that the book is finished. A lot of fans are looking forward to this book. A lot of customers want to pay for this book. Why not just delay the publication instead of cancelling the book? Why refuse to take the manuscript from the authors? Is this supposed to be some sort of punishment to stop your other authors from being late or are you going to accept the manuscript when you have a new slot in your publication schedule? |
| #9bigmacMar 03, 2008 19:05:55 | I'd like to specifically question this part of your statement:Wizards of the Coast planned to release Dragons of the Hourglass Mage in July 2008, as published in our catalog and posted on Amazon and other sites for pre-order. Despite our efforts, a manuscript was not forthcoming. Tracy Hickman has specifically said (and Margaret Weis says he speaks for her too) that they did finish the manuscript and attempted to hand it in. They say that Wizards of the Coast refused to accept the book from them. This is a slightly different version of events from yours. You seem to be suggeting that the book was not given to you. I have posted your statement elsewhere and people who have read Tracy Hickman's statment are questioning the difference between your story and the authors story. Please could you check if the book department was contacted by the authors and if they have a record of them attempting to give you the book. (You might also want to consider asking someone to write up a press release for Dragonlance Nexus as there is a lot of confusion in the Dragonlance community and they say they have been trying to get your side of things.) Thanks. |
| #10trhickmanMar 03, 2008 20:47:57 | Hi All. I received the following information to pass along. I apologize for not posting it earlier, but I am still out of the office from D&D Experience: I should like to clear up some misconceptions regarding the current state of 'Hourglass Mage.' First is the misconception that the complete manuscript was submitted to Wizards of the Coast. It was not. We were approaching the publisher to determine a proper turnover date when we were informed that the book would not be accepted or even read. Secondly, while there are a number of statements with which I would take issue in the above, this is not the proper forum in which to air them. Our hope in posting was to let you know that the July release book being sold and pre-sold with our name on it was not written by us. I know you want answers ... so do we ... and hopefully we'll all get them in time. On one statement, however, I am in complete agreement: we, too, are disappointed when our business partners don't honor their obligations to us and we, too, must move forward to ensure the continued success of our publishing business. Tracy Hickman |
| #11huntmasteravatarMar 03, 2008 20:51:38 | i certainly hope wotc take the script, reads it, accepts it and releases the offical M&T version of the last novel in the trilogy. i was looking forward to getting this novel and now i dont know whats going on. i wont buy it if M&T are not the authors. because it wont be the real story. it will be Fandom in my eyes and not offical. |
| #12silvanthalasMar 03, 2008 21:36:24 | Tracy Hickman has said that the book is finished. There's a big difference between a book being finished and manuscript being turned in. Even if the manuscript were handed in today, you're looking at a year to get the book edited and printed. We very likely wouldn't be seeing it until March 2009. So, that means the book is already going to be 8 months late from it's original advertised publication date of July 2008. WotC is obviously experienced at the publishing business. But I still find it disconcerting that WotC has had to have known for several months now that there was no way the book was going to be published in July, but they've only now finally said something to retailers. |
| #13rath_the_rangerMar 04, 2008 10:31:12 | Even if the manuscript were handed in today, you're looking at a year to get the book edited and printed. We very likely wouldn't be seeing it until March 2009. I take exception to one of your comments there... I don't think that WotC knows how to actually "Edit" a book any more. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with all the errors that get through their "editing" to the final print copy that we read (and I'm just talking about basic, glaring errors). |
| #14ramenthMar 05, 2008 3:11:26 | Not to point out the obvious, but Amazon is also taking preorders for books like "A Dance of Dragons" by George RR Martin, a book which is confirmed to not be finished, and for other things such as World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, which isn't even in beta yet. Amazon.com generally puts books for preorder up as soon as they have any concrete detail. I wouldn't read overly much into the listing. While I'm sure it's possible something is going on, more likely Amazon is just sticking it up in advance. Edit: Plus if you read the description, it's not detailed enough for an actual summary. Someone's just tossing that up so that Amazon.com can make money doing preorders. This is hardly the first time this has happened with Wizards products. |
| #15lancereaverMar 05, 2008 11:51:26 | This infuriates me to no end. Nobody knows Raistlin like Ms. Weis and Mr. Hickman. I am very disappointed.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| #16mindolinMar 14, 2008 8:32:18 | I just hope that WoTC decides to take Weis and Hickman's names off the cover, because they can be sued if they don't. Yeah, WoTC has done a pitiful job of editing their books, and some of their more recent things have been so sad that I know 5th graders who could have done a better job. Eternal Outlaw, I couldn't agree more, considering their pathetic buisness paractices I will not be purchasing any more official D&D products from WoTC. |
| #17lancereaverMar 14, 2008 12:28:25 | All right, I'm not very savvy in book publishing lingo, so can someone please tell me what this means? (This was WoTC's response to Ms. Weis and Mr. Hickman's concerns over Hourglass Mage) "Wizards of the Coast planned to release Dragons of the Hourglass Mage in July 2008, as published in our catalog and posted on Amazon and other sites for pre-order. Despite our efforts, a manuscript was not forthcoming. Plans for the book are on hold; we have not recommissioned it. Today, we communicated this news to our distributor, and we expect that within the coming week retailers taking pre-orders for this book will cancel those orders. We are always disappointed when our business partners don't honor their obligations to us, but we must move forward to ensure the continued success of our publishing business." |
| #18mindolinMar 14, 2008 13:53:16 | What I got from it is that they decided to punish Weis and Hickman for not having the manuscript when WotC decided they wanted it, and also decided to ignore the fact that books are sometimes delayed. I mean, the 5th Harry Potter book was delayed for 3 years, so what are a few months, especially considering the blow that Dragonlance fans have just suffered in having no more official products. They claim that Weis and Hickman have not honored their obligations, and they are doing what they have to do. Personally, if they want to ensure the future of the publishing buisness, learn how to edit, I've read of a number of errors in their novels, and seen a horrible number in the game books. WotC can learn a few things from Sovereign Press, since at least they had errata for the books they publish usually within the week of the time the book is published, and we're still waiting for a fair amount of errata from WotC. |
| #19silvanthalasMar 17, 2008 21:56:49 | Today, we communicated this news to our distributor, and we expect that within the coming week retailers taking pre-orders for this book will cancel those orders. It looks like somebody is in no hurry whatsoever, as the book is still available for pre-order on Amazon.com, and it's still listing a July 1st publication date. So, any updates from WotC's end as to why this is? |
| #20mindolinMar 17, 2008 22:27:27 | Because WotC is becoming ever more shoddy in such matters |
| #21articblastMar 18, 2008 23:05:30 | If Margaret and Tracy doesnt write it, I wont buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont know whats going between wotc and M&t but if they try to put this out with out margaret and tracy its going to be pr nightmare for wotc. |
| #22articblastMar 19, 2008 16:17:14 | I think the problem is more than this book. First the gaming license situation doesnt help wotc. I havent seen any future releases but it doesnt look good. With statements like dl will only limited releases. I think best way to head this off is to have wotc annouce its plans for the future. Explain to its customers what directions it plans to take!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| #23mindolinMar 19, 2008 18:28:13 | That requires more planning than what their current approach seems to be. Can we honestly expect them to turn from rolling dice and determining the next week's plan based on the result? That's just too much work |
| #24jymiscoolMar 23, 2008 21:13:54 | The way I understand it is that Weis & Hickman were on their book tour for Dragons of the Highlord Skies. They were being asked for the manuscript for Dragons of the Hourglass Mage and they more or less told WotC that there was no way they could finish it. They asked if they could renegotiate their deadline. WotC asked if they were trying to renegotiate their contract. Weis and Hickman explained that because of the book tour that WotC put them on, there were was no way they could finish the book and have the quality be anywhere near what we, the readers, would expect. WotC said "Well, if you want to back out of your contract, then don't give us the book." Seems to be, if this story is true, that WotC has become more concerned with it's bottom line than with it's customers. I mean, what's the harm in delaying the book? It's a book that's guaranteed to sell. It's the book people have been waiting for and to think that some hacks are going to finish the story of one of the greatest characters in fantasy is just a travesty. I, for one, will never buy another WotC product. Let's face it. Old school games are being hung out to dry by WotC. It's a shame, but that's what happens when you are more concerned with your bottom line than you are about the product you create. |
| #25rikkiwalkerMar 27, 2008 16:40:02 | Sounds like WOTC has become a business that has been taken over by people who have not the slightest clue as to who they are marketing to. The crap quality of the Dragonlance movie justs shows how far they have fallen. |
| #26mindolinMar 27, 2008 22:47:30 | And they still want us to be thankful we got even that. Frankly, I would prefer no movie to one that makes my favorite book trilogy into a laughingstock. They have no idea who they are marketing to, and don't truly care. The only thing they care about is how much money they can squeeze out. |
| #27darthsylverApr 02, 2008 23:09:51 | Well it just seems to me that they are phasing out anything that they might have to pay royalties to. Anybody notice how the settings that made D&D fun are almost all gone? They created Eberron which gave them a whole new world to play with. Now they are creating whole new race origin stories (and deities) for 4th edition, anybody wonder why? |
| #28articblastApr 02, 2008 23:59:53 | Sounds like cutting back overhead so wotc can be sold! |
| #29kalstrandApr 03, 2008 17:47:49 | They don't pay royalties on any of their settings be it FR, DL, Eberron, or Greyhawk. |
| #30americanlordApr 20, 2008 11:02:10 | Is there any new news? |
| #31raydashApr 22, 2008 15:04:57 | Funny way to find out the book is in trouble... I go to my amazon account waiting to see the release date AGAIN, after a month of so and... OH MY GOD! No book or ANY information about it. I ended up here. I've never posted before in any of Wizards forums, but I ust felt this was worth it, at least to share the feeling with someone other than myself. I've followed Dragonlance story since the 80's. Back then when I was an active D&D GM. The first module I played as GM was: DL-1. And I just realized that I've only followed Dragonlance thanks to Margaret and Tracy's writing. The only Dragonlance novels I've read, are those written by them. I was really looking forward to reading this new story, I hope this is just a temporary delay. A year or so of waiting will not harm me as a reader but, l bet it will increase my number of visits to this forum and Amazon while bitting my nails. I know I will not buy this book if it is not written by Margaret and Tracy. And this is not something I hold against anyone, is just my personal taste. |
| #32elrikdarkstormApr 23, 2008 11:36:53 | This just sucks,i was really looking forward to this book coming out,i just read dragon of the highlord skies a month ago and was blown away by that novel and then i read in the back of the book what dragons of the hourglass mage was going to be based on and i almost threw up i was so excited, then i come on to this forum and fine out that it wil not be coming out,i just wanted to say thanks to WOTC for toying with my emotions, which is not a very smart thing to do,because i will go to washington to there HQ and make my case to who ever is in charge and i am not worried about there little security guards they are no threat to me,i was a United States Army Ranger for 4 years,so,i just really want this book to come out since i have no personaal life at all and i have not gamed since 2004 (which thank you to nate hawkins that should be changing).oh one more thing why did the price of the game core books go up in price so much, they have doubled since i bought the ph 2.5 and the dmg 2.5 i know that cost goes up and everything but double and when the 4th edition comes out and the country is in a resession, what then, sorry for the rant ,i am just having a bad day and i dont mean to threaten anyone,i just want the book to come out like the rest of us.thank you piece out E.D |
| #33rikkiwalkerApr 24, 2008 21:18:19 | This blows...Raistlin is one of the coolest characters ever created and I have always wanted to know what he was up between the time he found the Key in the Library to when he met up with his brother again, also I would like to know what he was up to for the 2 years between the events of the chronicles and legends....but I suppose we will never know. |
| #34wilamacApr 28, 2008 1:18:37 | I can't believe this. I've been reading Dragonlance since the 80's and have been looking forward to this book since I heard that M&T were writing it. I have been an avid D&D player for 28 years and was planning on getting into 4th ed. but I don't think I will now. There are plenty of other novel and game companies out there and I don't think I want WOTC to get any more of my hard earned money. |
| #35DragonhelmApr 28, 2008 7:38:17 | Guys, be sure to listen to the next episode of the Dragonlance Canticle podcast. We have an interview with Tracy Hickman regarding this book. I have offered WotC a chance to be on the podcast too, but they have graciously declined. Their prior statement stands. |
| #36ah_squirecamApr 28, 2008 23:18:08 | Frankly, I am appalled at the way WOTC is treating MW & TH. But it only fits in with the way they are acting company wide these days. Issues with Gencon Issues with Dragonlance Issues with A&A Let me join the others in saying I will NOT purchase any DOHGM book not written MW & TH. And the way WOTC is acting, I will boycott all DL products, if not all WOTC product. MW & TH made the dragonlance world worth following. For WOTC to treat them poorly is shameful. |
| #37zipdriveMay 01, 2008 16:58:06 | I'm very sorry to hear about this ridiculous malfunction. come on, Wizards, you can do better! Let the hourglass mage be pulished! (as written by hickman and Weis). |
| #38sailorcallieMay 01, 2008 17:02:33 | I'm very sorry to hear about this ridiculous malfunction. I agree with those who want Dragons of the Hourglass Mage to be published and as written by Weis and Hickman. |
| #39Duke5150May 07, 2008 21:36:41 | We the readers, the consumers have bought two previous novels that leads up to this monumental moment of Hourglass Mage. Now we won't get the final story in the trilogy? Nor will we get the final Dragonlance novel of M&T?? I certainly hope that someone at wotc who's heart still beats within their chest finds the ability to do the right thing. Hourglass Mage as written by Margaret and Tracy needs to be published in their words so the readers can finish this trilogy and gain satisfaction. Otherwise we will always be wondering what happened, and we will harbor hard feelings, be they disappointment, anger, sadness or whatever the reader feels. I am a long time reader and fan of Dragonlance, And if Wotc does the right thing and Hourglass mage is published in the written words of M&T then it will dispell any unease I have towards Wotc, And I will continue to be a loyal and dedicated fan, and Buy future products from Wotc, Hasbro and any allied companies. If the book is killed and never see's the light of day then my loyalty to Wotc dies with it. :hoppingma :headexplo |
| #40knight17May 07, 2008 22:10:40 | Why does it seem that WOTC and TSR before them always seem to dump on DL fans? ![]() I am so tired of this. For years I heard the bogus line that Dragon Lance just doesn't "sell" as a game world and that there was little or no point to produce products for it. Then they gave the license to Margaret Weiss and she made it work. I am so tired of this treatment of loyal DL fans!!! :hoppingma :headexplo :raincloud ![]() |
| #41wolffenjugend_dupMay 11, 2008 17:28:28 | Yeah, DL is such a "poor" seller that they keep churning out novels year after year. Sales must be atrocious. ![]() |
| #42rikkiwalkerMay 13, 2008 21:34:26 | And they made the effort to make that truly epic piece of crap that was the movie; i tell you the Dungeons and Dragons movie was easier to sit through then that . |
| #43hcottersonMay 15, 2008 18:16:29 | I want to acknowledge that, from our point of view, nothing is easier than to **** and moan about how stupid WOTC is. I'm saying that because, as I think about this issue, I come to the conclusion that it would be very surprising if there wasn't (what looks like) a smart business move behind this. WOTC isn't stupid, they're a successful business, and a lot of times they take flak from us for doing new and/or strange things that, later, we come to love. However. I really can't fathom what the smart business move behind not publishing Hourglass Mage could be. It will be a bestseller. It will be the last Dragonlance book. It's just so hard to imagine a scenario where canceling the release of this book will do anything beneficial for WOTC. It will (and is) creating bad blood with fans. There's just...something going on on the other side of the glass, and without that inside information, none of this makes sense to any of us. I suppose, worst-case scenario, that even with that inside information none of this makes sense. I just really hope this wasn't some ugly corporate decision handed down from Hasbro or something. I can imagine everyone in R&D really hating this, but (obviously) having to be a part of the company that does it. For a very enlightening interview with Tracy Hickman himself on this topic, check out the Dragonlance Canticle podcast (www.dlcanticle.com), episode 15. Required listening for DL fans ****** off and confused about what's happening. |
| #44wolffenjugend_dupMay 16, 2008 21:21:19 | I think eventually it will get published, using the Weis & Hickman version. It sounds to me like W&H were late submitting something and simply assumed WotC would accept it. For whatever reason, WotC didn't. The window of opportunity has apparently closed and now the book isn't going to happen. Ultimately I think the parties will kiss and make up and the final book will get made. It's really too far down the road for the parties to end the Dragonlance saga on such a bad footing. |
| #45rikkiwalkerMay 18, 2008 13:01:55 | True. It is incomprehensible that WOTC would basically tell them to f off just because they did not finish a book on time; what did they expect? Do they not see how many books those two are releasing? They are like the Stephen Kings of fantasy. If the powers that be at WOTC had any brains or soul they would let W&H do the book on their terms and take it when its ready. |
| #46kevinmMay 28, 2008 16:11:59 | Is it me or does this whole situation sound extremely familiar? Any one else remember when TSR originally went belly up and was bought out by WOTC? Aside from the fire they made a number of extrodinarily stupid moves with their fiction lines, most infamously the problems with R A Salvitore and the decision to let some one else write Drizzt. WOTC take a hint from the blunders of the past and don't shoot yourself in the foot. |
| #47articblastMay 28, 2008 19:16:20 | If you check at the DL forum its been posted that Margaret and Tracey will write the book. The contract supposed to have been signed. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D |
| #48americanlordMay 31, 2008 0:24:42 | If you check at the DL forum its been posted that Margaret and Tracey will write the book. The contract supposed to have been signed. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D That's great news. |
| #49goofydudeJul 29, 2008 19:55:06 | I called customer support at WotC today. I told him that I read the other books and that it stated that the next book would be published at the beginning of this month, but when I go to bookstores I can't find it. He stated that there was a delay and the release date had been pushed back to July of 2009. He did not say that it was canceled, merely delayed. Hooray, I think. |
| #50raydashJul 30, 2008 9:38:08 | Excellent! :D |
| #51wolffenjugend_dupSep 20, 2008 15:11:30 | Any updates on whether this book will be published or not??? |
| #52Arawn76Sep 20, 2008 15:30:21 | Who ressurected this thread? Hasn't this all been resolved? |
| #53xmen510Sep 20, 2008 15:47:43 | Any updates on whether this book will be published or not??? The book will be published in 2009. This was announced at GenCon this year. As well as possible hints at a 4th Edition revival of the Rpg as well. |
| #54raydashSep 20, 2008 16:00:10 | The book will be published in 2009. This was announced at GenCon this year. As well as possible hints at a 4th Edition revival of the Rpg as well. Great news! Margaret and Tracy involved, right??? After a failed attempt to re-explore the world on the new Forgotten Realms setting (it sucks!), a 4th Edition of Dragonlance would be great. Let's hope so... ![]() |
| #55kalstrandSep 20, 2008 16:48:43 | Any updates on whether this book will be published or not??? I don't have the link to the statement anymore but it was released on the wizards site that it will be published next summer. |
| #56mourn_dupSep 25, 2008 13:40:27 | http://www.dragonlanceforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=388048&postcount=504 |
| #57redxdeliversSep 26, 2008 17:53:11 | i heard this was to be relesed in july 2009. written by weiss and hickman. i also heard there was going to be a gargantuan green(cyan bloodbane) and raistlin figure set sold around the same time. |
| #58karrdOct 25, 2008 0:47:25 | I found this info at two different sites. http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Hourglass-Mage-Chronicles-Three/dp/0786949163 Here is the link to Amazon I believe. It says it is coming out in 2009. |
