| #1greylordOct 22, 2008 20:24:04 | Just wondering, when they come out with Dragonlance, seeing that many things they have done have been unpopular...how would fans feel about a reset? What would you think about starting the campaign setting right after the Summer of Chaos, with everything after that being tossed to the wind? This would not be WotC throwing out the great efforts of those who have looked after Dragonlance since then...but throwing out what seems to be what is the least favorite part for many fans...that of the fifth Age, the Death of Takhisis, step down of Paladine, and other such things. A complete reset to right after the Dragons of Summer Flame? Would you hate that or love it? What if it were to be reset to another period...what would your preference be. Right before the Chronicles Period? Right After the War of the Lance? During the Reign of Istar? After the War of Souls? Right before the War of Souls? |
| #2aliothefoolOct 23, 2008 5:16:08 | I'd hate a reset. I love the direction the setting has gone in, and I hope to see it continue. |
| #3Cpt_MichaOct 23, 2008 8:51:07 | Can we reset it all the way back to just past the War Of The Lance for good measure? There's just so much bad that happens during Age Of Mortals. I don't know enough about the Summerflame area (chaos war) but I'm guessing the bad rotting of the setting had to start somewhere. During the Reign of Istar would be really fun. I'd love to see that. (I'm pondering doing it myself.. but I need more precataclysm fluff than the source book gives me) |
| #4ranger_regOct 23, 2008 18:38:48 | Just wondering, when they come out with Dragonlance, seeing that many things they have done have been unpopular...how would fans feel about a reset? Is this for the new audience to attract more DL fans to gaming, or for us longtime fans? At this point, it doesn't really matter to me, since I prefer the Fourth Age (post-War of the Lance). My campaign intend NOT to head into the direction that was created during the SAGA card-based System period. |
| #5greylordOct 25, 2008 14:48:37 | Is this for the new audience to attract more DL fans to gaming, or for us longtime fans? Both. Just an investigative question on if a reset would be viable, and if, at what point the reset should take place. |
| #6Arawn76Oct 26, 2008 6:40:29 | I'd be all for it. Anything remotely tainted by the summer of chaos fiasco should be purged from collective human memory. |
| #7eldritch_lordOct 29, 2008 16:24:56 | Doing it in the Reign of Istar period would be interesting; wizards throwing unlimited spells around (at-wills and encounters) would be ample reason for the Cataclysm to happen, since obviously only the righteous, holy, etc. servants of the Kingpriest's deities of choice should be granted that power. |
| #8ranger_regOct 30, 2008 0:00:16 | Both. Just an investigative question on if a reset would be viable, and if, at what point the reset should take place. So long you don't reboot the War of the Lance -- although you could add side-stories other than the main story of the Companions -- it doesn't matter to me. |
| #9CCSOct 31, 2008 1:13:07 | Don't care. My own games are always set just before/during/just after the War of the Lance. Somtimes that storyline is more important, sometimes less, sometimes not at all. But that's the era I run DL games in. |
| #10dmdOct 31, 2008 9:07:45 | I think just having something for 4E (for those who will actually use 4E) would be good. I can see arguments for or against a reboot. (Though the Dragon Overlord period was kind of meh). I actually just finished playing in a campaign in the Age of Mortals (the trilogy that was released). I thought it was well done and vey enjoyable. I think the current direction in the Age of Mortals is where things should have gone after the Chaos War (IMO). |
| #11ranger_regNov 01, 2008 2:00:34 | I think just having something for 4E (for those who will actually use 4E) would be good. Meh. Maybe, but I'm not playing 4e until 2010 passed over. --still stuck on 3e, in a good way. |
| #12zenontheterrible_dupNov 03, 2008 2:28:21 | i would feel great about it. keep the original three books ![]() make sure that kender, dully dwarves, and gnomes, are NOT PLAYER RACES. god i hate that ![]() |
| #13Cpt_MichaNov 03, 2008 9:26:38 | But Kender are halflings.... |
| #14zenontheterrible_dupNov 03, 2008 12:58:58 | i agree, but a more annoying sort that gives players permision to always try and steal from everone and everything!!! ![]() |
| #15SoulsongNov 04, 2008 22:18:13 | Anything remotely tainted by the summer of chaos fiasco should be purged from collective human memory. Agreed. Although many of the additions after DoSF could easily be worked into the continued 4th age (where they were interesting and actually fit with the flavor of DL). The stagnancy that many bring up was self inflicted by those fans in their own games. Ours were never railroaded, and we used the HotL as historical /contemporary flavor. They added to the investment and emersion without dominating it. I think our first party met Lauranna, Dalamar and a vestiige of Raistlin/Fistandantilus each once. They were just backdrop to our characters exploration of Krynn and what our DM wanted to show us. The only dieties/priesthoods that weren't well represented were Zivilyn and early on Majere and Hiddukel. Otherwise, our DM worked these into the campaign marvelously (even in 2e when specialty priests of these gods were totally aweful ability-wise). It is also false to say that the only way to "liven things up" was to destroy the world in the exact fashion that DoSF and later books did. The Paladine/Takhisis conflict could have easily been deemphasisze in other ways, and the HotL could have been deemphasized without killing them all off. Other interesting characters could have simply been introduced in the normal flow of history (contemporaneously with HotL or not). |
| #16ranger_regNov 05, 2008 16:16:36 | i would feel great about it. In this particular case, I vote NO on reset. ![]() |
| #1718DELTANov 05, 2008 17:11:22 | -I would have liked a reset of all of the Setting's myself. Take the good stuff, leave out the bad. Start over with them. I will probably do this with my version of the Realms. :D 18DELTA (Chosen of Cyric!) ![]() |
| #18zenontheterrible_dupNov 05, 2008 18:10:11 | In this particular case, I vote NO on reset. I feel special ![]() :P |
| #19draggahNov 07, 2008 13:42:46 | If there was a reset, I'd like to see it reset to just after the War of the Lance period. |
| #20ranger_regNov 08, 2008 14:42:00 | If there was a reset, I'd like to see it reset to just after the War of the Lance period. Is there something about the Dragonlance: The Legend Trilogy that you don't like? |
| #21zenontheterrible_dupNov 08, 2008 14:48:41 | Is there something about the Dragonlance: The Legend Trilogy that you don't like? i know the question wasn't directed at me, but i want to answer anyway ![]() IMO the legends trilogy is awesome. But to be honest i love just about everything written by weiss and hickman (together). but as for a campaign world, i don't think the legends trilogy really affects the world or the player characters much. Unless you plan on having the characters interact with the original cast (which i personaly wouldn't do). also to clarify my earlier post, I love kender, gully dwarves and gnomes. The humour of weiss and hickman is probably my favourite thing about there writings, however, i don't find my player characters nearly as funny as kender or gully dwarves, and i find these races are so pigeonholed that they become a distraction from the game. |
| #22ranger_regNov 08, 2008 15:46:20 | i know the question wasn't directed at me, but i want to answer anyway Perhaps not, but it did took place after the War of the Lance. AFAIC, I only like the storyline up to The Second Generation anthology novel. And at the risk of getting flamed, I like Tanis. I relate to him. I didn't want him to die. |
| #23zenontheterrible_dupNov 08, 2008 15:51:58 | Perhaps not, but it did took place after the War of the Lance. it also took place before the war of the lance, and all over the time line!! haha. my favourite part is when raistlin steals Fistandantilus's health (or body, or whatever it was)! sweet revenge. me too. about second gen, and tanis. i did like the last trilogy as a set of novels, but i didn't like what happens to Krynn as a world after legends. AFAIC - i don't know what that means sorry. we all like characters for different reasons. i also relate to tanis, he is in many ways like the luke skywalker of the story. whiney but noble, haha. I also related to sturm cause he's a good guy who falls for the wrong ladies, but does whats right in the end. taz, flint, and fizban are all funny and just plain old good times. MAN now that i'm talking about it, weiss and hickman need to make a new world, and a new series. or how about a RPG world based on the death gate cycle? |
| #24bigmacNov 09, 2008 20:23:09 | AFAIC - i don't know what that means sorry. As Far As I'm Concerned. ![]() I would go for moving the clock back before Takhisis stole the world, too (and not just because that event nerfs Krynnspace). The War of the Lance is the best time for a DL game. It is a time when darkness falls across a world that is totally unprepared for it. I think it is perfect for starting low level characters and then ramping up the threats as they level up. |
| #25zenontheterrible_dupNov 09, 2008 20:34:31 | i agree. i think the whole purpose of the fifth age, was an atempt to fix the big mistake they made in the fourth age. (that father off all and nothing dude was super lame!) the war of the lance was definatly the best, not just for nostalgia purposes either. |
| #26kalstrandNov 09, 2008 21:15:09 | MAN now that i'm talking about it, weiss and hickman need to make a new world, and a new series. I think they are working on a world called Dragonships. I say think because I can't remember if they are working together or if it is just Tracy. |
| #27sirpatricshieldstrikNov 10, 2008 13:55:42 | i agree. I personally do not think that the Dragons of Summer Flame novel was that bad in fact I think it was a way for W. and H. to end the series. Not the best ending nor their best work but OK their were some pretty good parts. Here's what Weis said in an interview with Science Fiction Weekly: Weis: Like Tracy says, we've probably written the last Dragonlance book three times now. When we wrote Dragons of a Summer Flame, everybody figured that was an ending point for Dragonlance. We knew we were going to take the world into a different age, which eventually became the Fifth Age, the Age of Mortals. It makes you wonder what they did want to do with the fifth age. |
| #28Cpt_MichaNov 10, 2008 14:48:08 | Maybe something good? |
| #29ranger_regNov 11, 2008 21:05:08 | it also took place before the war of the lance, and all over the time line!! haha. my favourite part is when raistlin steals Fistandantilus's health (or body, or whatever it was)! sweet revenge. Don't confuse me with the time-travel crap. The story did originated AFTER the War of the Lance, when Raistlin became a black-robed wizard. |
| #30Cpt_MichaNov 12, 2008 8:56:48 | *head explodes from use of time travel* |
| #31HobbitFanNov 12, 2008 19:05:22 | I seriously doubt a timeline reset is going to occur, becuase 1. WOTC already got Weis and Hickman to come back and fix things with the War of Souls. 2. I think they want to continue to sell novels, which a timeline reset would throw out of wack. I think alot of fans might want a return to the glory days but I don;t think that is realistic right now. |
| #32sirpatricshieldstrikNov 13, 2008 7:25:48 | I also don't think a time reset would be good for the books. I think in the end it makes for a better campaign setting even with all the garbage that happened after Dragons of Summer flame. It would have been interesting to really see what would have happened to all the clerics if the magic wasn't screwed up by the new writers. I mean why couldn't some other extra-dimentional being come in and take their place. What's to stop the gods from Toril or Oerth from taking up residence? Heck, you could even design a campaign around that, create your own Krynn. |
| #33wolffenjugend_dupNov 16, 2008 14:16:37 | For what it's worth, my long-running Dragonlance campaign was intentionally started immediately following the War of the Lance because, IMHO, a lot of what followed was pure crap. I threw out the canon developments that followed the war and we've had a great time. |
| #34bigmacNov 18, 2008 13:55:56 | MAN now that i'm talking about it, weiss and hickman need to make a new world, and a new series. It is both of them. Bones of the Dragon (Dragonships of Vindras) is due out on January 6, 2009 according to Amazon. Then again they gave false information about Weis & Hickman's last Dragonlance book. I seriously doubt a timeline reset is going to occur, becuase 1. WOTC already got Weis and Hickman to come back and fix things with the War of Souls. I don't think you should make the mistake of assuming that Wizards of the Coast will not do something that makes no sense. If you slipped me an advance copy of Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide a year ago, I would have thought it was a hoax. That has some barmy things in it that negate some of the eariler novels (as well as earlier RPG products). Putting out a restrictive GSL is pushing companies (like Paizo) into developing rival RPG systems (instead of jumping onboard with the current edition of D&D). Zapping this forum (and then putting it back) was a pointless waste of time (that is due to be keeping the moderators and forum members busy for years with DL thread move requests). Refusing to publish Weis and Hickman's last Dragonlance book (and then having to climb down) was also a foolish thing to do. Wizards of the Coast have done some great things and some things that are so bad, you can't really work out why someone thought it was a good idea at the time. I hope that the 4th edition Dragonlance Campaign Guide is something that long time fans enjoy. But I won't be counting my draconians until they've hatched. |
| #35ranger_regNov 20, 2008 1:24:48 | I seriously doubt a timeline reset is going to occur, becuase 1. WOTC already got Weis and Hickman to come back and fix things with the War of Souls. Meh. If Star Wars can have Era sourcebooks, so can DL. |
| #36ranger_regNov 20, 2008 1:26:26 | I hope that the 4th edition Dragonlance Campaign Guide is something that long time fans enjoy. But I won't be counting my draconians until they've hatched. Don't you have to do some kind of corruption magic to make draconians out of dragon eggs? |
| #37Luis_CarlosNov 25, 2008 9:17:37 | Why not a uchrony, alternative timeline or parallel universe? Time trivel is official. What if when History of Krynn is changed, only a new timeline is created? A book (100% background, nothing of rules) about optional timelines could be a good idea. Let´s imagine: saga of crisis on infinite... what am I saying? |
| #38ranger_regNov 25, 2008 12:09:57 | Let´s imagine: saga of crisis on infinite... what am I saying? Heh. Mirror Krynn, where Tanis is bad and Raistlin is good, and the Solamnic Knights lead the Dragonarmies. ![]() |
| #39Delazar78Nov 28, 2008 9:52:55 | or how about a RPG world based on the death gate cycle? now, that's a GOOD idea! |
| #40Darth_CaffeineusNov 28, 2008 11:10:47 | War of Souls was a great reboot for Krynn with a sparing use of retconing. Instead of yet another cataclysm, the novels focused more of political and factional upheaval. The Elves are homeless, the Minotaur invasion, the Knights are conflicted between upholding their code and their own self interest, the Draconians have their own nation, the Conclave must rebuild in a world for or sorceress and renegade wizards, clerics compete with mystics, the rise of the Ogre nation, the Knights of Neraka trying to hold onto power, and even the Gods are jockeying for position in the post Paladine/Tahkisis power vacuum etc. Krynn is already set up for 4E, they just need to add some new villains and threats that can come into the mix not completely take it over. Maybe the need to move the timeline 20-40 years but that’s it. |
| #41darthsylverDec 06, 2008 23:49:54 | Personally I think they should set the campaign in a future date and instead of progressing the campaign they should write novels and sourcebooks for the years leading up to the date set in the campaign. For instance set it in the year 700 or 800 AC and tell the stories leading up to this date. Once the novels catch up (or get close to the date) WOTC accept submissions of campaign journals for those who played in the year that the campaign is set in and then writes novels of these journals and progresses the campaign world in this fashion rather than creating their own stories. You could even accept campaign journals for the adventures set in the intervening years. |
| #42HobbitFanDec 10, 2008 0:03:09 | I agree with Darth Caffein that we already have the stage set with the War of Souls and connected later books. Los of story and adventure potential there. Death of Lord Soth was kinda crappy though....and Mina was real crappy. Super duper extra crappy mega-sized. ps. Mina was crappy. |
| #43steelwindJan 03, 2009 14:24:33 | If you read the Legends of the Twins RPG supplement they present many alternate versions of Krynn. My personal favorite of these was the one detailing what the future was supposed to be like after the summer of chaos when Tas went for Caramons funeral the first time. I would have much prefered the 5th age to have turned out like this where Palin, Jenna, and Dalamar are the heads of the orders, Marshal Medan leads the Knights of Takhisis, the elven nations are united, and most of Ansalon is in a tenuous peace through the United Realms (a diplomatic council with members from the Solamnic Alliance, the Nerakan Empire, the Ergothian Coaliltion, the United Elven kingdom, and the dwarven kingdom) with the mounting tensions of war. |
| #44treymordin-tariniusJan 09, 2009 19:32:41 | The Chaos War and the War of Souls were actually interesting. I was sad at the end of the Chaos War, hated the novels of the Age of Mortals trilogy, but loved what Weis and Hickman did in the War of Souls, players now have options that were not there before. |
| #45The_White_SorcererJan 11, 2009 6:24:21 | Raistlin stealing Fistandantilus's power/body/whatever was a total rip-off of Naruto. :P More seriously though, I wouldn't mind them using the Age of Dragons timeline (the one Tas saw when he visited the future) as the official one. It would change the ending of Summer Flame, but it would completely ignore SAGA. |
| #46Darth_CaffeineusJan 11, 2009 9:27:24 | SAGA and the early age of mortals were quite bad, but I prefer the post war of souls in the recent novels and 3.5 sourcebooks than the the Age of Dragons alternate timeline. Age of Dragons is pretty good. I ran a 3E game before the sourcebooks came out, that was very similar in theme to that timeline. The game dealt with the second war of the lance (the war at the begining of dragons of summer flame) without Chaos attacking. However the current timeline has much more poltical upheavel and fragmention, which leads to more types of plots you can use. In age of dragons the cold war between good and evil dominates the setting and I find it a little limiting. |
| #47warghoulJan 17, 2009 1:44:42 | I think Krynn is finally heading in the right direction again. Myself I would like to see some Age of dreams and or Light stuff. Taladas should be explored also I think. |
| #48sirpatricshieldstrikFeb 03, 2009 8:24:28 | Actually considering the character classes that greatly differ from the original games character classes that Dragonlance was created from I think a re-boot may be the way to go to create a Dragonlance Hasbro D&D. |
