It was an off-the-cuff way to pass some time on the road. We started some diceless gaming. What emerged was a Cyberpunk/Dragonlance mix. Some Kender hacked into a very secure network and one of them got the Braindance treatment through his wetware. Now investigators are trying to find out what this Kender discovered before his neurons got fragged. Some elements are:

Gully Dwarf infestations in the outer slums, but most people don't report them to the exterminators because they keep the rat count down and can sometimes be useful.

Drow, but not the typical D&D evil drow. They are simply elves that fell in love with the land's caves and have chosen to live there, taking on a black hue to protect them from things that already live in the caves. Not necessarily evil. One character is an investigator working on the Kender case above.

The government is global and all-pervasive. Story conflict so far is based on insurgents and cyber criminals, which I want to try to lead to other worlds and planes. In fact, the network the Kender hacked was on Oerth.

A character's value in society is dependent on their job. Employed people pay taxes, therefore they have certain rights and pivileges. Government employees have more rights (based on their position), the unemployed have very few rights.

A human sub-species has evolved that is somehow superior to the normal huamn being. They are the only true first-class citizens. What we call a normal human is now a "sub-human".

These are just some bits we gnawed on as we passed the miles. I have never read a Dragonlance book except for the 1e Dragonlance Campaign setting. (And I, uh, saw that movie...). I'm thinking of clapping something together for some die-rolling, maybe a one-shot just to see if we can go anywhere with it.

So, you Dragonlance Maybe-Not-Know-It-Alls-But Certainly-Know-More-Than-I-Do, how would you Cyberpunk Dragonlance? I want the global government to be a constant factor looming over the PCs lives, sort of like the bad guys won, but if they get too heavy handed they know they'll never be able to hold it. Kind of like the Gestapo lurking in the shadows. You know they're there, but you never know if you're just going to get a threatening warning, or if you're going to disappear in the middle of the night.

What would you guys do with it, besides drown it in a bucket?

I think it sounds like a lot of fun, unfortunately, I know almost nothing of DL so I cannot help much beyond wishing you the best of luck!

To me that sounds like an entirely new setting using rather than just steampunking DL.  It does sound fun but I wouldn't worry about trying to fit it into a current setting.  I would make it a stand alone setting pulling in the elements from other settings that you like.

I was originally hoping to push Krynn about a thousand years into the future, but yeah, you're right. It sounds like I'd need to know the entire history of the Dragonlance setting to see what would fall where*. Maybe I'll start setting up the world's parameters and maybe get a campaign journal going. Tentative working name: "Cyberlance". (Sounds better than Lancepunk, eh?)

Quickie question: how much good pickin's is in the 3e version of DL? (Or is it just 3e versions of everything in the 1e sourcebook?)

*In RW history, I'm a Very Big Picture person. I can see how our current problems with the Mid-East tie directly back to the Barbary Wars, which tied to a formerly long-standing "agreement" with the British Empire (no slur to the British, it was the move I would have made had I been in charge), which tied further back to... well, you get the idea. (I'm a biiiiiiig fan of James Burke, BTW.)

Your best bet for dl fluff would be the 2e source books I think. Maybe the 'global government'
could be the Red robe wizards got tired of krynns constant wars and started a push for
neutrality and 'took over.' Now good or evil is a no-no and big brother is making
sure every stays neutral at all times.

2e? I've seen 1e and 3e settings, but never a 2e. I looked around at Amazon and eBay and didn't find anything.

The 2E setting was published in the Tales of the Lance boxed set.  I think you will be good to go with any edition for your history and fluff.  The history is the same and each edition just moves the timeline forward to follow the novels that had been publieshed at the time of the setting books release.

The 3rd edition Dragonlance material by Sovereign Press/Margaret Weis Productions is the golden era of Dragonlance gaming.  It brings the various elements of the world of Dragonlance to present a coherent view.  Created by people devoted to the setting (including yours truly), it is the best representation of Dragonlance out there.

Of course, I am biased.  ;)

Read up on the various Knightly orders.
and the kingpriests of old.

lots of inspiration for how the global government got started in the far off future of Krynn.
