Well, it's not like it changes much anyway. Aside from a few rare exceptions, the power source given in the rules has no impact at all on the mechanics. Despite the often-denied rule of thumb that there are no psionics on Krynn, the word "psionic" in a class' description don't mean much. Just call it "the power of the Mind" (as opposed to "the power of the Gods" or "the power of the Hearth") and be done with it. Replace the word "psionic" with "ki" on your character sheet if you'd prefer, but the typical monk powers have all already been established to exist in the DragonLance setting.

May 22, 2009 11:52:09 The difficulty with Dragonlance and Monks is that the implied workings of monks in the original Saga is that they more closely resemble Medieval Christian monks than the Chinese almost Jedi like monks of other settings.

Jun 01, 2009 2:40:27 Well, monks weren't really mentioned in the Holy Six, but in what books they are mentioned, I always got a "Kung Fu" vibe from them. I know some of the other followers of Majere do resemble the scholarly Western-style monks...but the monks themselves always felt Eastern to me. At least that's how I've always played them.

I don't think they'd have to be all psionic when played in the Dragonlance setting, but rather more like it being a case of "mind over matter" sort of thing.

Jun 01, 2009 18:44:33 Its been a bit since I read the whole thread but in the Mina Trilogy one of the main characters is a monk of Majere. He is very Shaon (sp?) Monkish.

The designers discovered that Ki and Psionic are so close thematically, that they just combined them into one.

It's funny, as psionics is a no-go in DL, yet there are spheres of mysticism (channeling, meditation, mentalism, and sensitivity) that deal with powers of the body and mind. You can just say that psionics are a part of mysticism, if psionics in DL bothers you. Or, you could say it wasn't categorized properly when they first came up with the spheres. After all, mysticism is a "new" magic.
