For a while now I've been meaning to pick up some of the Dragonlance books for light reading. However I've heard that the original series (Autumn et al) has a cliche'd "motley band of heroes goes on a Quest(tm) to save the world" plot and it was based on a transcription of an actual D&D campaign, so I think I'll pass.

Do I have to read the previous books in the series to understand the later books?

Which books/series would you recommend?

If you don't like 'Heros go on quest to save world', then you might want to just avoid dragonlance... or about all of fantasy books in general.  Granted, I am not the best to comment on cliches as sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them.

That being said, the original 3 books are not needed for a number of other books to make sense, but any books that happen after the 'main adventure' are going to make far less sense unless you skip far ahead, basically to the war of the souls.  Other books, especially those of stories about or before the cataclysm, have almost no need to read the main adventure.

Yeah, Avoid Dragonlance if you think that "heroes saving the world" is cliche. I actualy starting reading Dragon lance with the "Twin" Saga: Time of the Twins, Test of the Twins, and War of the Twins. (Not sure if that's the actual order...) But I've read a lot of Dragonlance books, and they would all serve as a good jumping point. Just start on the first book of any saga and i think you'll be hooked.
