Magic missile is always 3 projectiles, unless the caster chooses to spend a 2nd level spell slot (or higher) rather than a 1st level spell slot on the casting of the magic missile. |
| #3philipnichollsAug 31, 2014 18:24:36 | if you cast magic missile using a second level spell slot you get 4 darts |
| #4maddiemoonAug 31, 2014 19:52:49 | Thanks Phillip: So, if I cast Magic Missile in a 3rd level slot then I get 5 missiles? I just want to make sure I am understanding the spell descriptor correctly. Thanks! Maddie |

Check the Wizard class description for more details on spells per level. The other replies are correct regarding number of missiles. But a level 3 wizard cannot cast a level 3 magic missile. |
| #6menaklesSep 01, 2014 16:29:58 | This confusion between character level and spell level has been around since 1E, and was raised as a concern by the community during playtesting.
To clarify further, a 3rd level Wizard has four 1st level and two 2nd level spell slots, so she could cast Magic Missile as a 1st or 2nd level spell. Casting as a 1st level spell creates three darts and casting as a 2nd level spell creates four. Once she reaches (character) level 5, she will have two 3rd level spell slots and will, if she so desires, be able to cast MM using one of these slots. |
