I've been making a few magic items. The idea is to make them charged so they have a limited use. I also wanted to make sure they scaled with level and thus would remain useful and viable even in high levels.

Badge of the Berzerker (Rare, Requires Attunment)

This bull's head medallion was possessed by an ancient barbarian lord. If you have the Charger feat, on a successful attack the foe needs to make a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone. In addition, the Badge has 3 charges. It recovers D3 charges at dawn. The wearer can expend a charge to:

  • Gain the benefit of the Charger feat on your next attack.
  • Gain the benefit of Rage until the start of your next turn.
  • Add +D12 damage to a successful attack.

Spear of Athene (Rare, Requires Attunement)

This weapon is a pike decorated with etching of owls. It is dedicated to Athene, the goddess of excellence and war. It is a +1 magic weapon. The Spear has 3 charges, which it recovers at dawn. The weilder can expend a charge to:

  • Add a D6 to AC as a Reaction after the attack is rolled but before it is resolved. This can be granted to an ally within reach.
  • Add D6 to an attack after the D20 is rolled but before the attack is resolved.
  • Add D6 to the damage of an attack.

The size of the die scales with level as per Bardic Inspiration, so at 5th level it goes to D8, etc.

Figurine of Wondrous Power: Scapegoat (Rare)

The scapegoat can be summoned as an Action. It has the same statistics as a goat but it has 40 hit points. On the goat's turn it takes the Dodge action. However, enemies preferentially attack it when it is in melee range. They need to make a DC 15 Wisdom save or attack the scapegoat instead of any other target within reach. When it is killed or after 10 minutes, it reverts to being a figurine and can be summoned again in 7 days.

The goat seems interesting. The spear, however, seems like it would be of more use as a magical instrument for bards. The badge does something that Totem Barbarians do better. Personally, I would recommend having the badge instead grant its wearer a Barbarian Rage once per day, which recharges at dawn.

The Badge could function as a Construct's Berserk feature for anyone that doesn't naturally have any Barbarian Rages and grant a Barbarian an additional Rage per day, because they've trained to direct it. As for the spear, it still feels like it's stepping on the toes of what Bards are all about. That's mainly the reason why I thought it was best as a bardic instrument.

I never played in 4e. And, after seeing what Minotaurs get as racial features, Charging seems like a bit of an underwhelming ability. And it's not that it'll alienate the player of the bard, just that it's doing what the bard is supposed to, hense why it would be best as an instrument for them. It could grant them the option to select an additional creature to gain the benefits of a Bardic Inspiration as well as open up one or two extra features that it can apply to. Sort of as a means of incentivizing them to "Spread the Music" as it were.
