I was planning my thursday evening home-game and wanted to put a Clay Golem on the path of my PCs. Looking through its statblock I saw that it has immunity to damage from non-magical weapon or weapon not made of adamantine.

Ok, nasty beast.

I opened my DMG and checked through the treasure section to find adamantine weapons but couldn't find them. I remembered that there was a Stone Golem in HotDQ and went to check in it if there was an adamantine weapon but no.

My question is: where are the adamantine weapons? I can't find them.

Second question: I didn't play through HotDQ but how did your players passed the 2 stone golems if those without magical/adamantine weapons can't harm them? With their magical resistance (advantage agaisnt spell saving throws) golems seem to be almost indestructible.

Here's a list of things to keep in mind when using a golem as an obstacle to the party

  • Does the golem actually need to be destroyed? If not, it doesn't matter if the party can damage it or not because there is some other way that they can defeat the encounter with it - such as by realizing that they can't destroy it and then acting upon that knowledge by running away from it in the right direction so that they aren't just abandoning whatever goal they are working towards at the moment the golem becomes and obstacle.
  • The PCs could find a way to trap it.
  • The PCs could damage it with things which aren't weapons, such as making it take falling damage. You could even pepper the "arena" with columns adorned with adamantine spikes or torch sconces and clue the players in that toppling the column onto the golem will be a source of damage that bypasses its immunity.
  • You don't need there to be any benefit to adamatine weapons other than that they bypass this damage immunity, and you don't need to know their value in order to hand them out as treasure, you also could provide a few scrolls of the magic weapon spell to help ensure that there is some recourse to damaging the golem.
  • Having advantage on your save against spells like fireball is no different than being a bit lucky on your dice rolls, and it doesn't avoid the damage completely even if you are succesful on your save.
  • A clay golem is CR 9, which means that unless the party facing it is at least 4 well rested and equiped characters of 9th level or higher that you are at a high risk of some PC death during the fight - but a 9th level party has tons of potential for being able to handle the golem, such as knowing the magic weapon spell, numerous spells that deal damage of types it isn't immune or resistant to, and even the monk class having their unarmed strikes count as magic.

There's adamant in armors listed. Perhaps if they have any (AND know the vulnerabilities of golems....) one of your players will have the idea to re-forge some of their equipment. Otherwise I guess you'll find out just how creative your group is.

Remember spells like alter self can be used to give oneself a natural weapon that has magic properties.   Then there is the magic weapon spell of course.

and i would think the swords summoned by a druid spell are magic.

I dont think an adamantium weapon has any special bonus's , other than having more HP and durability than regular weapons if you tried to destroy it.

It would however be ungodly expensive to buy, and would probably have to be custom forged, as its unlikely a smith just has one lying around.
