Noob question. Do I need to adjust XP for the number of players when running Princes of the Apocalypse? Most game sessions, we have four PC's. Couple times, there were six, once there were two. I've just been giving out the XP listed in the monster stat block.

One of the plays suggested that I need to adjust the XP. He pointed to this>>>>>>>

which I suppose matches up with pg 82 in the DMG. So, since there were only two PC's that day, he suggested that they should earn more XP than what was listed in stat block, cause the encounters should have been harder than if it were a full party. I can see the logic in that, but then, that means, I should have given them less XP when the party had six PC's. The players don't all make it to every game session.  The encounters already seem way to easy for the party, probably because I'm not playing the monsters to their full potential. They breeze through boss fights in a round or two. I'm new at DMing and it's a big challenge. So much flippping back and forth in the Princes of the Apocalypse book. I can never seem to find the info I need at the moment, no matter how much I prepare. There a good group of players and I want to be fair. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

You give out what's listed for the monster divided by the number of PCs. So let's say you have an encounter with 10 kobolds. They're 25 XP a pop, so that's 250 XP in total. If there were four PCs, they'd each get 62 XP. If there were six PCs, they'd each get 41 XP. If there were only two PCs, then they'd each get 125 XP.

In terms of adjusting XP, that's only to determine any given encounter's difficulty. You don't use the adjusted amount to determine how much XP each PC gets.
