#1 transcendantviewer Jul 30, 2015 12:23:18	I just remembered one of my favorite weapons in the game: the humble Harpoon. So, I figured I'd take a crack at updating it to 5e.   Harpoon. A harpoon is a unique weapon, featuring a spear with either a narrow chain or rope tied to the trailing end. Due to the abserdity of the weapon, a harpoon is neither a simple nor a martial weapon, requiring the use of a feat to gain proficiency in its use.   Harpoon master Through painstaking training, you gain the following benefits. You gain proficiency in the use of the Harpoon, see below. When you throw a Harpoon at a creature on your turn and hit it with the attack, the harpoon sticks into them. A creature can use its action to remove the harpoon. A creature with a harpoon stuck in them cannot move beyond 30ft. of the creature that hit them with it. If you are holding on to the trailing rope or chain of a Harpoon that is stuck in a creature, you can use a Bonus Acton on your turn to drag the creature towards you. Make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) check. If you succeed, the target is pulled 5ft towards you and lands prone. Harpoon. 1d8 Piercing; Thrown, Special; range 30; 25 gold.
#2 shintashi Jul 30, 2015 12:59:41	You could make one shot "wand of fireballs" harpoons and call them Foyn's Fire Harpoon, they would incorporate delayed blast fireball that is triggered by contengency when you hurl your Harpoon. You could also have a specially mounted Ballista that shoots them. I figure 2 or 3 of these should be effective against a killer whale, and you could use a half dozen or so on multiple ships to fight a Kraken.   This is a magical spin on modern penthrite whaling grenades used to humanely kill Whales in Norwegian seas.

#4 BRJN Jul 31, 2015 16:06:01	"When going out to hunt Moby Dick, bring tartar sauce" !   It seems that a Harpoon without the rope attached is a Javelin.  Is this right? I would not have the special rules for the rope within the Feat, I would say "you can't use the Javelin + Rope = Harpoon combination without this feat.".  Then elsewhere (New Equipment?) describe how to combine the two to get one, and include the "pull things in" feature in THAT text.
#5 transcendantviewer Aug 01, 2015 18:34:22	There's some mild differences, but for the most part, yes. A Harpoon is just a metal Javelin with a trailing rope. However, you require experience with the weapon as a whole to make use of it properly. You can hurl a Javelin just fine, but throwing one made entirely out of iron that weighs about 6 lbs.? Not easy to use. Tack on an extra 5 lbs. for the rope that the javelin's now dragging? You're pretty much using an all new weapon at this point. That's where the feat and training comes into play.
