"At certain levels, your class gives you the Ability Score Improvement feature. Using the optional feats rule, you can forgo taking that feature to take a feat of your choice instead"
What do you think? |

| #3OoftaMegMay 26, 2015 18:58:23 | I think they're optional for a reason. Then again, I allow them and just throw more bad guys and it all works out in the end.
Certain feats also sound more OP than they are in actual play. |
| #4Tempest_StormwindMay 26, 2015 19:03:53 | ....where is the damage coming from? That seems impossibly large at level 4 without a crit, at least as sustained output. (A Vengeance paladin can hit 2d6+2d8+10 with advantage (but -5 attack, which is *really* significant) if he burns his Vow of Emnity and a spell slot, but that is what we call a nova.) |
| #5ankiyavonMay 26, 2015 19:25:53 | Even if it is OP, I think your player has a very low appreciation of how OP things have been in D&D in the past, if this is "as OP as it gets in D&D".
It also appears that he's assuming maximum damage for some reason; the max damage on 4d6 + 2d8 + 10 is 50, three times would be 150. Max damage is a pretty unrealistic assumption.
He also appears to be assuming that he will crit or drop something to 0 hp every single round. Also unrealistic.
Finally, he's assuming that every attack has advantage, which is unrealistic again.
(Side note: I'm not sure how he's saying that most of the damage would be magical, but then, I don't know where all those dice are coming from anyway.) |
| #6CCSMay 26, 2015 20:36:56 | I don't see the feats as OP....
But if your player is really worried about his character becoming op if he takes that feat? Well, there's an EASY solution. Theres plenty of feat choices, so he just doesn't pick THAT feat. Or maybe he just opts to take the ability score increase. Afterall, the games made on the assumption that you DON'T have feats. And just because you can min-max doesn't mean you have to (this fact seems lost on a great # of folks). |
| #7durntaurMay 26, 2015 20:47:47 | No, they're not OP. And as AOB pointed out, those figures you posted means the math went wonky. |
| #8Greenstone.WalkerMay 26, 2015 20:55:43 | You only get 5 to 8 of them, depending on class and race, and you have to give up +2 to a Stat (which is very valuable itself, especially if you started with point buy or array).
So, not overpowered.
Possibly the two -5/+10 ones might be, but they are somewhat situational. |
| #9WuzzardMay 26, 2015 21:32:17 | What no str bonus in those crazy damage dice? What weapon does 4d6 + 2d8 anyway? |

| #11Rya.ReisenderMay 26, 2015 23:56:17 | By RAW, a crit with a greatsword would be 4d6 and not 3d6. The rules say to roll all the damage dice twice on a crit. |

| #13AndrewJOMay 27, 2015 1:58:22 | Of course it seems OP, you threw in a few too many die when you calculated it, assumed max damage, advantage on every attack, the possibility of a crit, and completely disregarded the fact that he gets a -5 penalty to hit (at lvl 4 probably evens out), and assumed the PC will either kill or crit every turn. |
