#1 OresanFells May 04, 2015 19:20:05	Howdy folks,    I've recently taken on the job of running a campaign for a group of players after a long break from roleplaying. I've decided that a Lamia is behind the recent disappearances of many local figures. The campaign is set in massive Harbor City at the edge of a sprawling desert.    My current problem: I've kinda hit a snag and can't really think of anything interesting to do with a Lamia that would change the typical encounter in an interesting way. I want the lamia to feel supernatural, moreso than the 1/2 human 1/2 lion body and magic spells. For refrence I had a previous character accompanied by a Shadow that was projected from himself, and would allow him to teleport to its location. I want something like that for the Lamia fight to make it challenging for a party of level 5 adventurers.   This adventure is for the DnD 5e rule set.   I was wondering if you all had any ideas you would be willing to share, even just a bit of inspiration would be great.    Thanks.
#2 transcendantviewer May 04, 2015 23:44:31	Giving monsters class levels is always an interesting way to beef up an encounter. Want the Lamia to be a more potent spellcaster and lingering BBEG? Give it a few levels in Paladin. It's already got Charisma as it's casting stat and can disguise itself at will. A few spells here or there and some Smiting, and it looks a lot more like the party's new healbot. For now, at least. Tell the players that after a particularly devastating encounter, another support/fighter is going to be useful. After all, the best villains are the ones you never expect and nowhere does it say that a paladin can't be Chaotic Evil.
#3 OresanFells May 05, 2015 20:53:33	@transcendantview thanks for that. It helped me decide ezactly what I wanted to do.    Incase your interested: I gave the Lamia 3 levels of warlock. Taking the great old one Patron for access to Tashas Laughter, and Phantasmal Force. I also took path of the tome for access to a few extra cantrips to deal with a plethora of situations. It could potentially allow me to sway the fight in interesting directions.    Thanks.
#4 transcendantviewer May 05, 2015 23:01:31	Sounds like a plan, though I would have gone with the false-visage of a Cleric or something. Gain their trust and sabatoge them from the inside. Could make for either a really deadly encounter to wisen up the PCs/Players, or make for one hell of a lingering threat.
#5 Ralif_Redhammer May 06, 2015 7:30:49	At first I thought the thread was about “Beefing up a Llama as the BBG.” Equipping the Lamia with some magic items would also help (though nothing you wouldn’t want the PCs to get a hold of).   Also, since it's on the edge of a desert, why not throw in a sandstorm at some point during the combat?

#7 Mechatarrasque May 06, 2015 11:05:10	Half dragon template is also a good way to add a little something extra (wish there were some more applicable templates).  Oathbreaker paladin lamia with some skeleton gnoll minions has a lot of potential, including some story potential about a paladin who breaks her oath and is cursed into being a lamia because of it.
