| #1PSusacDec 11, 2014 9:14:03 | My wizard wants to buy spells from NPC's. My DM is ok with this, but he can't find any rules for it. Any suggestions?

My wizard wants to buy spells to ADD TO HIS SPELLBOOK from NPC's.

You can direct your DM to page 135 of the DMG where it briefly discusses buying (and selling) magic items, and even suggests values in such a way that the following is a brief summary: Cantrip or 1st level spell 25-50 gp 2nd or 3rd level spell 50.5-250 gp 4th or 5th level spell 250.5-2,500 gp 6th through 8th level spell 2,500.5-25,000 gp 9th level spell 25,000.5+ gp
Edit to clarify: those prices are for purchase of the scroll itself, not including costs to scribe into your spellbook. |

First let him roll a gather info check to see if the spell is for sale somewhere or if an other NPC wizard has it then direct him to said NPC. Let him roll a diplomacy check to see if he is allowed to copy it (mostly this dc is about 20 in 3.5 cause a wizard would NOT suddenly let another wizard look into his spell book). If he doesnt fail any roll he can copy the spell for 10gp*spell level*caster level+100gp material costs (all 3.5 rules) |

(10 x spell level) + (spell level x spell level x 5) =
1st 15 gp 2nd 40 gp 3rd 75 gp 4th 120 gp 5th 175 gp 6th 240 gp 7th 315 gp 8th 400 gp 9th 495 gp
Not included are :
- the materials, a blank spellbook to record the spells in mostly 50 gp (100 pages/spell levels)
Besides this, consider placing a spellbook/scrolls in treasure hoards and allow trades with befriended wizards, or have him join a wizard's or adventurer's guild.
A wizard's /adventurer's guild might require a nominal fee per month to have access to their common library for research, and allow copying of spells for a modest fee. In return a character might have to pay a fee per month or spend time working for the guild, casting spells , recording lore, teaching less experienced wizards (spending down time), follow a code of conduct and come to the guild's aid when needed.
Consider working out a something with the renown system in the DMG if the character decides to join a guild. |
