| #1CooperjeraSep 29, 2014 11:05:58 | I'm running Mines of Phandelver with custom characters. One of the characters is a sorcerer. While cleaning out castle Cragmaw the team ran into a group of 6 hobgoblins. The adventure was scaled up for 6 players, and they made a lot of noise. The level 3 sorcerer pulled out the scroll of fireball she picked up from earlier and proceeded to cast it. We did not find any rules for casting from a scroll, much less, casting from a scroll at a lower caster level. We used the 3.x ed rules for scroll casting.
Would you have any recomended changes to the casting difficulty or to the stats rolled to cast from a scroll at a higher level based on 5th ed rules? Would you know if the scroll casting rules will be in the Dungeon Masters Guide?
Thank you. |

Spell Scroll |

I would look at scrolls as just really powerful one shot items. If you allow this you need to be really careful what scrolls you are handing out though!
Also, if there is a wizard in the party scrolls are far less likely to get used as a spell but rather written down in the spellbook.
EDIT: NEVERMIND!!! Didn't see the section in the Basic DMG online. |

I believe I'll extrapolate from the text provided to state that the caster will roll proficiency bonus + spell casting ability bonus + d20 vs a DC of 10 + spell level. Therefore if the 3rd level sorcerer has a charisma of 17 she would roll d20 + 5 vs a DC of 13 to cast a fireball spell.
Thank you. |

IT doesn't have the table on save DCs/ attack bonuses and the wording is slightly different, suggesting that you can't cast the spell at all if it's not on your class spell list.
I'd stick with the version from the DM basic rules, though. |
