Hey all,

My group plays Eberron and we take our music very seriously. I've compiled enough music over the past couple years that I have playlists for any situation... except, apparently, desert environments. The players are making their way into the Demon Wastes this week, and I'm suddenly realizing that I have very little deserty music. Do you guys have any suggestions of the top of your heads?

Additionally, one of the characters is a Tiefling that once hailed from a Gaash'kala tribe. She's going to be undergoing a ritual to open up blocked memories from her past... so, lots of drums, fire, screaming, general voodoo ****. I really want a great song to play in the background for this specific scene, but I literally cannot find anything decently creepy/tribal sounding. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The soundtrack from the game Journey comes to mind for desert travel stuff, not so much for the intense ritual though

In my Dark Sun game, I use music from the Spartacus TV series. Maybe that could work for a desert/tribal Eberron game too

I find that a good portion of the OST for Homeworld (1999) by Paul Ruskay has a very Middle Eastern and African flavor to it. Much of the OST is ambient sounds, peppered with the aforementioned flavor, that often consists of droning in various forms (e.g. glass harmonica, synth, Asian) and tribal-esque rhythms.

Imperial Battle Music 0:15, 0:32

Swarmer Battle Music 1:01, 1:50, 2:22

Turanic Battle Music 0:49, 1:39

Kharak System 0:06

Other compositions featuring the kaval (gypsy-esque), rhaita, zurna (this one is cool), mey (has a somber timbre), ney (love this one too), shehnai, and duduk (Duduk of the North (Gladiator) - Hans Zimmer; much of that ST is like that); use YouTube to find samples of each.

The Battlestar Galactica reboot evoked some of what I loved about the Homeworld OST as well.

Certain chords evoke this feel and that's why you find them in moves with desert settings:

Lawrence of Arabia 1:05

Stargate 0:40

EDIT: added the shehnai to the instrument list.

Beats Antique is an excellent place to start, its a little bit modernized but it's got the elements you are looking for. Also going old school with some Ravi Shankar would not be a bad call. In fact I'd say start a couple of Pandora stations based on those and just keep an ear out for what you want.
