| #1KentusNov 25, 2014 15:31:22 | Hey there, just want to brag about it.
Sometimes I get together with some friends from another part of the country to play D&D. We had such a session for two days (since we pretty much got all free) and since my players wanted to try some high-tier game in the new edition, we started at 11th level (or more so, converted the 4e characters into 5e, we all got 5e experience to that point, but play in other groups normally, since we live hours apart).
The plot itself was classy, since we needed to get this done in 2 days and it's more about reliving old times. Sword and Sorcery style, a wizard seeked the adventurers to recover a magic item in an ancient temple, since he was 'interested' in archeology and he paid them good in gold, fame & power (since wizards are kinda noble in this gritty setting).
Since we converted the characters and adjusting the most iconic magic items per houserule per e-mail beforehand, we could started right away. The party: 'Warden' (now paladin of the ancient), fighter, bard and wizard.
Pretty much everything went well, even though I forgot, how annoying the fighter player can be sometimes. Most likely by mocking my well-planned situations and such, since he has some confidence in his character building techniques (minor case of min-maxing, even though he's not annoying me with this more than necessary). After clearing the dungeon and facing death multiple times (and the fighter mocking the death traps afterwards), they recovered the item, a magic iron box, closed. They brought them back, bring it to the wizard, who leaps in glee, takes the box and teleported away (dick-move). The players were pissed and pursuit him to his tower, facing his minions and such, great dungeon delve. Fighter got arrogant and began to take it ingame, mocking the minions and officers of the wizard, who were about to travel to the Abyss, since in the iron box was a key to that plane: A Plane Shift Rod. There he wanted to enslave a greater demon to use it to dominate the whole kingdom (he had all the stuff necessarily to it, but the church destroyed, sealed or watched over every known way to the Abyss in this homebrew setting). So the players came to the evil wizard and his elite and less-elite warriors. An epic battle like we know of 4e, but the fighter was cool, since I got no luck hitting him. After the evil wizard overpowered the party wizard, the fighter came in and he was a Mage Slayer.
"Ha, now you're doomed!" 2xMiss and 1 Hit due Shield "Am I? You're nothing more than a pebble on the way to my supremecy!" Got hit due Mage Slayer, used Blink. Not blinking. "Your magic makes you weak! And dumb! Like your minions!" 1xHit, a critical (uh-oh) and 1xMiss. "And you're ugly, stupid, your clothes reeks, you're a sissy (and so on)..." rolled % "...Changing plans. Minions, distract him!" Dodge, blink (what timing!) 3 Minions begin to use the help action on the fighter. "Nothing to worry about!" Action Surge and 6 attacks took care of two of them. "I didn't want to use my most powerful spell yet, but you'll die horridly!" Takes the rod they found out (same turn, free action) "You'll be the one to die!" "Ennorim Euz Avoracado!" *made up; hit due Mage Slayer* "Begone!" Plane Shift, hits with advantage due help, fighter with Cha -1 can't make the save due DC 16, even with Mage Slayer advantage. You feel like the world itself begins to flicker and as you're falling, deep, deep down, into the deepest of the deep, a swirling surrounds you and you got the feeling, as you're flushed down a toilet. "Am... guess I have to sit it out."
After combat (which was pretty hard afterwards and the bard was almost dying twice), the story got concluded and the paladin destroyed the rod, even before anyone could say something.
What about the fighter? You're in a place, where fire is burning the sky, where lightning crackles with every step and poison fills the air and you fell in a pit of acid. As you were climbing out, you felt something was just about to catch your ankle. And your arrival was detected, a group of ape-like creatures is looking at you and after seeing you, they began to check you. Or more precisely, your equipment. "Really?" one of these creature said: "No iron? Just a bunch of steel?" Cackling. "This will be fun." Well, I guess you know the rest, you died horridly. "What if I try to run away? I'm confident." You successfully escaped those ape-like creatures. Day after day comes, the poison in the air is slowly killing you, every breath you take, takes days of your lifespan, the fire sky is slowly burning every level of skin, until your flesh is exposed and black. You died. Horridly. "Damn it."
Great session and somehow a nice retribution for two things: Mocking means of death and dumping charisma. We all had fun, even the fighter, even though he seems to be a bit upset here and there. ;)

What a story, a cautionary tale. Bravo.
Was the fighter player cool with it? I'd love it if that were the end of a 2 day one shot if I were playing that pc. |

Poor fighter! Though I wouldn't consider -1 cha mod a dump, as you're getting a score of 8 in the standard array. Maybe some people define a dump stat as the lowest score, but I've always considered it a score below starting value, with points redeemed through it to increase another stat (i.e. 6 intelligence to get 16 con).
Don't mean to derail the thread with definitions though! More on topic, next time you guys get together, the fighter should reappear as an enemy transformed by whatever malevolent forces occupied the plane where he 'died.' I was going to suggest they stage a rescue, but then I went back to reread the paladin destroyed the rod! I'm guessing he dumped intelligence? =D |
