| #1ArcherA10Feb 08, 2015 12:37:53 | Hello,
I am new to DM'ing and I would like to know tthe rules and regulations to DM'ing a PVP encounter. My group plays 3.5e and they are all mostly very high level (They are mostly level 26). Please explain in detail if possible or direct me somewhere that I can read it. Thank you very much. |

All I can tell you is that there are no special combat rules specific to fights between player characters. They roll initiative normally, they take their turns normally, they take actions normally, the only difference is that they're fighting each other instead of monsters. If you explain the specific situation you are dealing with and what about it you need advice on, then I can be of more assistance. |

When two players want to have their characters do battle, I set it up where the DM describes the environment, the players describe what they want to do, and then the player whose character is the target of an attack narrates the results of the attacking adventurer's actions.
Anyway, this is the D&D 5e DM Help forum. For help with other editions, consider checking the previous editions' forums. |

And a fight between characters of that lv will be quick & desicive.... and then you get on with the rest of the adventure taking into account any repercussions of the fight. |

There are no rules and regulations regarding PVP encounters. Run them exactly like a Player vs Monster encounter, only with less work for you! YAY LESS WORK!
The only accomodation you might want to make is to allow players to pass you notes regarding things like spells cast or items used, unless the other player has some way of detecting/perceiving/identifying them. (Such as, depending on the edition, Spellcraft or Arcana checks)
The problem - particularly with high level characters - that you will run into is the vast amount of pre-planning and preparation the players will want to put into effect before the first dice is even rolled for initiative. When PCs try to kill another PC they don't want anything left to chance. A good rule of thumb is "If I would give a PC a chance to notice if a monster tried to prepare this attack/trap/contingency against them, I should give them the same chance if another PC were doing it".
You can also offer a good exeperience point bonus for good roleplaying to the person who is the best sport about the whole thing. Even if that bonus goes to their next character!
Enjoy. |
