#1 Snowtor Sep 30, 2014 11:09:44	So I have this Druid player who is transforming into Large, 10 x 10, creatures. Considering thier strength this sounds about right. However, it has greatly complicated our combat with me having to come up with on the fly rules. We use minis and a battle map. If some of the party is in frount in a 10 x 10 dungeon coridor and the spider climbs to the cieling upside down Im stuck as to if it should be allowed to be over the front line folks.   Anyway, its confusing anyone know of any good resources to deal with these large beasts in tactical combat?
#2 iserith Sep 30, 2014 11:38:04	The question to ask yourself is if the space the spider would like to move into or through is occupied. A Medium creature occupies, for the sake of argument, a 5-foot-cube. A Large creature occupies a 10-foot-cube. Creatures cannot move through the spaces occupied by hostile creatures unless the creature is two sizes larger than the one that is trying to move through. So if it's a Small spider trying to move through the Large creature's space, it can. (But of course, if it leaves the reach of any hostile creature, it may provoke opportunity attacks).
#3 Uthrac Sep 30, 2014 12:12:15	3-D combat has always complicated D&D.   How tall is the ceiling? As pointed out, you need to think in terms of cubes instead of squares. Assuming 10' high ceiling, the spider would need to squeeze into the space if it ended its turn there.   Note also that 5e is different in that you can break up your movement and allied spaces count as difficult terrain, so the spider could scuttle to the front, attack, and then fall back (provoking) or remain on the ceiling above (squeezing).
#4 Timborama Sep 30, 2014 12:49:52	Enemies also count as difficult terrain if you can move through them (as stated above). So if the ceiling is low(ish), the small spider will be hindered in getting to where he wants to go. If the ceiling is higher, it can get there more freely.   But if it ever leaves the Druid's reach, it will provoke an Oppourtunity Attack.   No need for on the fly rules. They're there! And now you know what they are for the future ^_^   Also...why do the spiders want to get past that big beefy bear so bad...? Is someone carrying a spider egg or something?
