a good few of my players have been asking me about the possibility of being able to enchant items, i havent seen enchant anywhere in the books so i took it upon myself to create my own rules for it. just wanted your opinions:

Enchanting:

If you want to enchant an item it has to be a previously magical item. So you cannot enchant up a mundane item, but you can enchant something that has magical properties already. You can only enchant it with spells that you have within your arsenal  and the spells come with a set number of charges unless you crit during creation then its DM’s discretion on what to do there. Enchanting requires that you have a slot double the spell’s level available. So by this I mean, to enchant a cantrip onto an item, you need a 1st level slot available, a 1st level requires a 2nd level slot, a 2nd level requires a 4th level slot, a 3rd level requires a 6th level slot and a 4th requires an 8th. At 9th level slot you will be able to do a 5th level slot. It also takes time to do it, cantrips take a few hours, 1st level takes a long rest, 2nd level takes a day, 3rd takes 2 days etc.  You have to roll your arcana plus your spell casting modifier. SO:

Dave is a 5th level  Arcane trickster, he wants to change the enchantment of enduring sickness on his bone ring to sleep. So he need to have a second level spell slot available to him, Which he does not as he is only a 5th level arcane trickster. So instead he takes mage hand and puts it onto the ring. He rolls to create it. Being a cantrip its charges start at 2d20 so Dave rolls a d20 first, taking his Arcana skill, which is nothing, so he does not add anything there, but he does get to add his int to his roll. His roll comes up at 15, he has 16 int, making it a roll of 18, which is most definitely a success, and so he rolls 2 d20’s after that. The d20s come up at 18 and 7. Meaning that Dave now has a ring of mage hand with 25 charges on it. He then rolls a d12- being that it is a cantrip- to see how many charges get refilled at the end of a 24 hour period.

I'm working on enchanting in my 5e game aswell.

I'm using "Volo's Guide to Everything Magical" It has 12 Pages about Enchanting.

I also use the 2nd AD&D GM book and Spells and Magic, they both speak of Crafting, Enchanting.

Some other books are; Book of Artifacts, DM Option High-Level Campaign.

The old rules where;

PC has to be level 9

Has to have a Library to conduct research.

Has a Alec Lab to combine potions to make the bath medium for the item in question.

Spell of Enchantment, and a spell to keep it on.

Regiments to make said enchantment.

Spell to put on the Item.

So in the old rules, enchanting was like defieing the gods so it was a very hard process to do.

Regiments are things like a Gem, Special Wood from a forest, Dragon's Blood ext.

Example: The PC's can take a Wand carved from a Rare Tree in a forest, take a (Brown) Tourmaline. So they have the 2 basic physical items. Now they need to bath the item into a potion like sultion made from; Lich Dust, Dust of Dragon Bone, Mushroom from Underdark or something. Then take it to a special place to be enchanted "Echted Stone Slab, Magic Forge or somthing" Cast the Enchant Spell on it, then the spell you want to have on it (Lighting Bolt).

BOOM! roll a arcana check, if they succed they can have a new Wand of Lighting Bolt with 3-12 chargers or something.

There is alot more to it with the Spells and Potions and everything this is kinda like a brief, brief depscritption on it.

Not sure if the new 5e DMG well have anything about it, it sould lol.

I make my enchanting hard, but very rewarding with kinda like a random effect on items, sure you can do everything right, but it does not mean it will come out right. So a item could be cursed? or have a Negative effect, like rather then making a Posion Res shield they made one that attracts Creatures with posion lol. I never really make it "Fail". I try to keep items balanced, not too many charges or too high level of a spell or buff.

Volo's Guide to Everything Magic, 2ndAD&D DMG, 2ndAD&D Spells & Magic, 2ndAD&D Books of Artifacts, and DM Option: High-Level Campaign.

Find'em online.
