With time and proficiency in DMing, I'm giving a go at creating an entirely new RPG system that suits my style better than D&D. It's a long process though, and in the meantime I am considering a divide among various of the core six for my D&D table into more appropriate abilities.
Strength and Constitution would remain the same. Dexterity -- Agility measures gross motor skills Dexterity, fine motor skills. Intelligence -- Recall for memory based checks Analysis for acquiring new information, puzzle solving, investigating etc Wisdom -- Wisdom for intepersonal senses, empathy, faith Sensitivity for the 'five senses,' alertness Charisma -- Presence for appearance, leadership, outward influence Conviction for force of will, resolve
So my foremost question is, has anyone else tried something like this already for D&D? What were the results? It's not something I'm dead set on doing, but I like the more accurate descriptions of a person's overall aptitudes, and I'm fairly confident every action, saving throw, caster ability scores, skill check etc... will fall into one of the corresponding abilities. I mostly worry about creating additional dump stats, especially for point-buy character creation, but I'd also like to get others' insight into how such a change could negatively affect the system in ways I haven't foreseen.

For me, this is a matter of semantics. So I don't care. Your way is fine. The other way is fine. I'm just not a huge fan of fiddly bits. The system could employ "The Combat Stat," "The Social Interaction Gauge," & "The Exploration Meter" using 3 stats instead of 6-12, and id be perfectly content. |

Not surprisingly, it was very min-maxable, as one 'half' of each stat was better for combat than the other. |

For me .
Strength -- Raw strength & gross motor skills
Constitution -- A mix of resilience & physique
Dexterity -- Reflexes and fine motor skills.
Intelligence -- Memory and analytical thinking
Wisdom -- Empathy and the Six Senses.
Charisma -- A uneven mixture of presence, comeliness & Influence; plus resolve |
