Extra PC for Phandelver

Hi all,

I'll be starting the Phandelver campaign on Saturday but will likely have six players - are there any extra pregens available anywhere with links to the story? My Player's Handbook hasn't arrived yet (tomorrow I hope) and I'd like to avoid charactcter generation for this session and just dive striaght in.

Also, any suggestions  re. scaling up the opposition to take the extra PC into account? I found that in 4E the large party pretty much devoured everything even with the suggested beefing up of monster numbers and I really want to emphasise how different 5e is in terms of the required approach - as in taking the 4e charge and bash strategy against pretty much everything is not going to work here.

Really looking forward to it. LMoP does not appear to be KoS!

Here's a thread with around 70 or so pre-gens for you, including back stories. I assume a few of them are easily adaptable to LMoP.

You can probably run the adventure fine with 5 PCs. If you find it's too easy, you can always add an additional foe or two mid-fight. Better to start out with less and add more in a second wave than to go all-in upfront and regret it.

If you'd like to see a different take on Phandelver, check out my signature for a link called "Re-Imagining Phandelver." It takes the frontier town feel of the adventure and adds a little Western spin to it. There are half a dozen pre-gens in that thread that fit right in: Chuck Dagger, Marshal Heeling, Vanciana Feyzalez, Mucho Cerveza, Falsetto Jones, and Hex Arcana.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm probably going to run our home group thru LMOP, and I will likely have 7 players. I'm not worried about pregens, but scaling it properly has me a bit concerned.

Thanks for the comments - I'll definitely adapt one of the pre-gens for the campaign - interested to know what people think might be the ideal mix of classes for a  six player party (in addition to the 2 fighter, rogue, wizard, cleric mix of the starter set pregens) - thinking Bard perhaps?
I'll use the encounter building advice in the online DMG for now in terms of balancing encounters - which basically means chucking in an extra goblin pretty much, at least for the first couple of levels.
thanks again

I think I have three players all using the same noble fighter pregen, each with different names. One is using a greataxe as written, another a greatsword, and the third sword and board. It works well enough, and we will roll unique PCs when the Starter Set adventure is over.

None of them have read the rules, so I'm basically teaching them as we go. So far, the roleplay is almost nil, as they are learning the basics (ie. when to roll a d20 vs. other die). Also, I'm pretty sure two of them didn't fully read their character sheets. I'll gradually address things as they come up in the adventure, but for now it has been a non issue. Also, once the adventure is done we will be scrapping these characters in favor of rolling our own to play the Expeditions.

A very easy solution is to give them a different background, such as soldier. A few edits here and there. Also, you can have some of them be different genders of the same pregen, etc.
