Feat: Binding Negotiations

I am attempting to build a balanced feat that gives a warlock invocation.  I want to put it on an NPC, but I know at least one player would be interested in the ability to take it as well.

Binding Negotiations

You have begun negotiations with some sort of otherwordly being.  You have provided something to this being, and it has granted you a taste of the power that could be yours with further deals.

  • You gain access to 1 warlock invocation of your choice.  You have no pact, unless you take warlock levels, and so cannot take any invocation that requires a specific pact.  Your warlock level for this invocation is your character level-3, even if you have warlock levels.   Each even level you may change which invocation you have chosen.

I have considered also adding +1 charisma to the feat as well.

The invocations this enables can be pretty significant at low levels.  Some of them are certainly worth a feat investment, others provide a very niche benefit.

Invocations available at level 4

Agonizing Blast -(Requires Eldritch Blast from another source, such as Magic Initiate.  This specific combo may be too powerful.)

Armor of Shadows - At-will Mage Armor.  Magic Initiate provides it for 8 hours/long rest + 2 cantrips.  Probably solid.

Beast Speach - Speak with Animals at will.  Situationally useful.  Rarely needed that the ritual would not be as useful.

Beguiling Influence - 2 skill proficiencies.  Skilled provides 3.

Devil's Sight - 120' darkvision.  Immunity to magical darkness.  Worth a feat?  For a race that does not have darkvision, usually.

Eldritch Sight - Detect Magic at will.  Useful more often thatn Beast Speach, but the ritual will still cover most circumstances.

Eldritch Spear - Requires EB from another source.  Not too powerful, and would preclude Agonizing Blast which is far superior.

Eyes of the Rune Keeper -  Read all writing.  Never know what good it may be.  In a campaign where this invocation is worth taking, getting it as a feat is probably worth it.

Fiendish Vigor - At will False Life.  Great at low levels, begins losing effectiveness just as this feat allows it to be taken.  Probably balanced.

Gaze of Two Minds - Could be useful.  Probably fine for a feat.

Mark of Many Faces - disguise self at will.  Another powerful option for trickster characters.

Misty Visions - Silent Image at will.  Another great trickster option.

Repelling Blast - EB required.

Available at Level 8

One with Shadows - Conditional At will invisibility.  The one I actually for the character build.

Available at Level 12

Otherworldly Leap - Jump at will.  Not particularly good as the invocation even 3 levels earlier.

Whispers of the Grave - Occasionally useful.  By this level someone probably has the spell for the times it is needed.

Available at 18

Visions of Distant Realms - Quite useful scouting.  Not gamebreaking availibility at level 18.

Witch Sight - Useful, but hardly too powerful at level 18.

As this list shows, the main power of this feat would be in the potential versatility it provides a character at level 4.  The most obviously problematic combination I see is to take this feat for agonizing blast and magic initiate for eldritch blast.  Multiclassing 2 levels of warlock to do the same thing as a sorcerer is already a popular theory build, and this feat would allow that to be negated entirely.

Does anyone else see something problematic with the feat I have missed, or any other concerns as to the power level of the feat.

I don't think you need to do character level -3. If a Warlock can have it at that level, then it's balanced for that level. Add the +1 Charisma, but drop the ability to change it. A patron isn't gonna give you free reign like one of their Warlocks.

I think giving a spell slot would be a bit too powerful.  Though at just 1/day I may be tempted to give it a try.  It may be interesting to see what the players think of to do with it.
