So far I have been house-ruling agonizing blast as a lvl 12 warlock invocation instead of a lvl 2 warlock invocation, I did this because the spellcasters have eldritch blast and hexblades have lifedrinker. So I decided to have them have their power spike at the same time, and also prevent players from abusing a warlock 2 dip.

However, I feel like a lvl 12 requirement is a bit high. I'm considering changing it and I want your opinions on it.

Should I...

- Keep it at lvl 12
- Change it to lvl 9 Warlock
- Change it to lvl 7 Warlock

- Make it scale only with warlock levels requiring investment into the warlock tree to utilize it effectively.
- Do away with the requirement entirely

Do away with it entirely.

I think the two level dip (for other spellcasters) is already protected by pact magic working differently than other magic. Plus, the two level dip helps the CHA-based sorcerer vis-a-vis the wizard, and most are of the opinion that the sorcerer is weaker than the wizard as-is.

You are more concerned about level dips and style balance than is needed, do away with the requirement.

Also, Agonizing Blast isn't that much of a "power spike" in comparison to a melee weapon wielding warlock:

  • At 2nd level when you can first get Agonizing Blast, it makes your Eldritch Blast do 1d10+Charisma damage, while a pact blade focusing warlock can be doing 2d6+Strength damage (a comparible amount) and still has both invocations to choose.
  • As levels progress, you get your second ray from eldritch blast at the same time the pact blade user can take thirsting blade, which brings these two different options closer together in potency since they now have similar damage 2x1d10+Charisma and 2x2d6+Strength, and have similar number of invocations dedicated to offense and thus similar number of other invocations to use as desired.
  • At 11th level, the Agonizing Blast combo steps ahead as eldritch blast picks up a 3rd ray. But that is only for a level before the pact blade user can take lifedrinker and make the comparison 3x1d10+Charisma  vs. 2x2d6+Charisma+Strength (which is to say probably an average of 31.5 with agonizing blast vs. an average of 30 with the thirsting lifedrinker combo pact weapon)
  • All the advantage that Agonizing Blast then gains over the pact blade route can be easily made up, if not over-taken, simply by the warlock getting ahold of a magic weapon - especially a potent one like a flametongue.

fixing the warlock dip is very easy.

Eldritch blast is no longer a cantrip and become a warlock feature.

This open a cantrip slot tothe warlock.

being a class feature, Eldritch blast now scale with warlock level, so if you dip only 2 levels, you gain only 1 eldritch blast.

All the warlock dip abuse are solve.
