Forgotten Realms 5e question

Hi everyone!

 

Long time player/DM here with some questions.  Having been out of the RPG loop for a few years, I have recently started back playing 5e.  Enjoying myself greatly.  Now I want to try my hand at running a campaign for my group.  The campaign is based in Faerun and here are my questions:

 

I have an old software package called Forgotten Realms Atlas.  I would like to be able to use the maps and such for creating my campaign but want to make sure there is consistancy with the 5e world.  

 

Would this work?  or is there a 5e equivalent?

 

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Sometime in the next few months, the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide will be released.  That may be some help to you.

 

For the time being, use the (ample) 3e source books and figure you might need to edit some details from time to time.  The 4e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting more-or-less "blew up the Realms" and the 5e project is to put them (mostly) back.  Keep what you like and dump what you don't.

 

Down a ways in the forum page is a whole section of Forgotten Realms threads.  Some of them will be helpful to you.  (They also contain much complaint that WotC is taking its own sweet time telling us anything - I too am guilty of contributing to that.)

I use a lot of the old FR material for my 5e campaigns. I also have the atlas, and used to use it all the time before I got a new PC. I need to see if i can find my old discs lying around somewhere and reinstall it . . . I say, use it to your heart's content, as it will only matter if you have a hardcore FR lore lover for a player, and that is not very likely. No one will be none the wiser and it is a great resource.

Thanks everyone!  My main concern was consistancy.  I know that the Atlas did not include the Sundering info and changes to the topography of Faerun.  So towns and locations from the Atlas may or may not be present in the world after the Sundering.  But the fact that this is a game of imagination, above all, I can make do with what I have.  I do appreciate everyone's input!
