| #1AkeishaJul 30, 2014 6:50:30 | Knowing how popular Forgotten Realms is in combination with it being the default setting for the new edition of D&D, I was curious as to what type of setting others planned to use for their campaign.
Do you plan to:
a.) Use the Forgotten Realms setting b.) Create a completely fresh and independent homebrew setting c.) Put together a setting that is a mixture of Forgotten Realms and homebrew
So far, I have always been one to create completely new and independent settings, but have incorporated the rare set of hills, town, etc. from a published setting. Beyond that, it has all been homebrew stuff. Default settings have just never quite clicked with me...
But I really like the small wilderness region featured in the Starter Set and find that I want to use it (with some slight alterations) as the starting point for a homebrew setting. Working up a mixture like this is a first for me, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the end result turns out.
Looking forward to seeing which settings you all plan to use... |

I have a ton of resources for FR already so it will be an easy place to start from for me. I don't have the time to homebrew anything, and really I can make up plenty of stuff to do in the sandbox of the Realms. |

| #4WickJul 30, 2014 9:12:44 | I have been working on a campaign idea that will bring in aspects from FR, DS, GH and EB. There are gates between them and and over arching power of chaos trying to bring all the know worlds into complete chaos. |

| #6ScarmiglionJul 30, 2014 10:27:47 | I've been using my own personal setting for three 4E campaigns so far and my players are getting used to it. Since most of them don't know FR very well we will probably stick with mine. I will just have to convert the important differences over. |
| #7EMRJul 30, 2014 10:34:46 | I'm planning to just adapt my setting to 5e, the spells are similar enough that it matches Pathfinder anyway, and since I'm houseruling in all 4e material as well, it'll be a glorious new day where players can play anything they want.
Going to be FUN! |

| #10AldathJul 30, 2014 11:38:58 | To be honest I've never been interested in the worlds of D&D, considering that even being a nerd myself, I find Epic Fantasy way too boring and most of the people who enjoy it are older than I and makes me uncomfortable (sorry, I'm a very young DM hahaha).
I'm more a fan of Dark and Anime Fantasy settings, so... it could eb the generations. |
| #11BoldItalicJul 30, 2014 13:55:42 | I'm continuing the homebrew world that I started from scratch for the playtest.
It's vaguely middle-ages England in period but with a more middle-European geography and just humans, elves, half-elves and dwarves as the races. Beyond that, not much was planned in advance and details have developed during play. The PCs all have strongly developed backstories and personal motivations and that drives the game - we are keen on narrative and role-playing. The setting provides a backdrop and a succession of opportunities and challenges, mostly from NPCs with the occasional dungeon when a quest or subquest seems to need one.
I could describe the all the countries, towns, dungeons, NPCs, gods, monsters, magic items and so on that have already featured in play (I keep logs of the play sessions) but not the ones that haven't been encountered yet. We make those up as we come to them. |
| #12DontEatRawHagisJul 30, 2014 14:38:24 | I'm continuing my Campaign from Playtests. The world was on the edge of destruction as the demons and celestials entered the mortal plane to bring about the end of the world.
The players are now survivors trying to eject the immortals from the mortal plane and bring back normality.
The he power level of the gods is only around level 15-20. And they are not all knowing or powerful. Which the players have only glimpsed a little bit so far.
After this I might break out Dark Sun. It's my favorite settng but I need psionics. |
| #13DrDragonlanceJul 30, 2014 16:44:08 | Started a Dragonlance campaign. Always been my favorite world. |

| #18RustedKitsuneJul 30, 2014 19:04:07 | Homebrew, all the way! I actually don't like FR that much, and if I had to play in a published setting it would be Eberron. |
| #19AldathJul 30, 2014 19:16:55 | Oh by the way, about my setting, Post Apocalyptic Tokyo! Don't imagine anything like Fallout, it has fields, jungles, lava and building ruins! |

I just love making worlds... |

| #26AriKanenJul 31, 2014 9:15:26 | Since someone already brought age into this, I think I'm going to show how dated I am in my thinking about this. Since FR seems rather huge, and I wanted something more managable that I could use for a more sandbox type environment BUT I still want to be able to use the new material for 5e (Tyranny of Dragons), I'm going to reboot FR back to "greybox" times. So before pretty much all the books and supplements after 1988.
The greybox has almost all the core elements of Forgotten Realms, and has a paragraph or two about almost everything I consider awesome about the realms. The supplements FR 1-6 give me a some room to go deeper. It appears Ed's Forging the Realms articles and new modules will be easy to integrate if they manage to keep things relatively era-agnostic. |

| #28VeilwalkerJul 31, 2014 12:02:30 | I run a FR +. Faerun is the backdrop but if I see something from another setting I like it goes in. Any class any race can be explained with magic, portals and gods. |

| #30Elton74Aug 01, 2014 8:07:12 | Some parts of my home setting would be easy to adapt, other parts will need some work.
The world has three campaigns going for it already: -- One is set during the Hellenistic age. Phaeselis
-- One is set in the world's Far East. Qin'ae: the Middle Kingdom
-- One is set during the Medieval Age, and has a slight horror feel. The Land of Caithness
---------------------------------
Easiest parts to adapt: Races. Races are the easiest to adapt. I've seen all the races that are going to be in the 5e Player's Handbook, so it should not be too hard. The original rules system is Pathfinder, but I'll be adapting it to 5e once I can get the books so more people can play in it.
Hardest part: or rather longest part -- Monsters and Gods. Bleh.
So far, for stealing locations -- I'm not sure if there is any locations from the Realms I want to drop into the world. At times, the realms had felt very contrived, or they didn't make any sense at all. The Grey Box realms, though, was very cool and wonderful to read.

| #32Goober4473Aug 01, 2014 12:08:37 | I've been running the playtest in a "generic D&D" style world. I came up with some basics, but most of what we started with was "whatever is in the books/documents" approach. So if the book describes dwarves coming from mountain kingdoms, there must be some mountain kingdoms, etc. The main game area is the human lands, which are made up of a bunch of loosely connected kingdoms, city-states, etc. to allow for maximum "make it up as you go" ability. Beyond that, we've been adding to the world as necessary. Players have created a number of cultures, countries, and locations, and I've added them as the adventures require them.
I'm currently also developing what I am creatively calling "D&D in space", which takes everything in D&D, and sets it in space. There's still magic and the rules are pretty much the same. People still usually use the standard D&D weapons (upgraded to vibroswords, monoblades, advanced hunting bows, magnetic spike-launching crossbows, etc.), with some added guns that are balanced with them. AI can emulate human intelligence, but no one has any good computers for some reason. It will be very much in the style of Star Wars: space wizards from the past future. I'll be making a post about it once it's ready. |

| #34joeburgosAug 03, 2014 6:48:19 | IM going to pretty much stick to A. But Im going to sprinkle a bit of C. I am somewhat familiar with the FR (Ive read some of the novels and comic books and the old Dragon articles). Its a fairly fleshed out setting. I may play around a bit with some of the metaplot and stick to the Sword Coast area.
I've even purchased the FR Campaign Setting book from 3e (I found one on ebay that still has the map) as well as the City of Splendor Waterdeep book.
Maybe someone will start a FR thread of resources for DMs to use.

| #36dungeondudeAug 03, 2014 21:52:01 | I've been playing in the Realms since the first box set was released.
BUT, I am not a fan of 4th Edition, so I have't played in sometime. I'm eagerly looking forward to launching a 5th Edition game, and getting back "home".
Now, I'm sort-of doing this campaign two ways. I do ENJOY creating things from scratch, and developing some of my own lore. What I will be doing, is creating a small hamlet in in the North, called Snows Edge. This little place has a very unique "look and feel", and is a caravan stop just a few days outside of Waterdeep. It sit's along a forests edge, nestled rather close to some crags. It' known for it's hot springs, which nobles and others find delighful, so it makes for a gathering place for a variety of interesting folks!
I've played and used numerous player characters and non-player characaters through the years. Some of them, have a such a detailed personality, they are a BLAST to remember and bring out! SO, the hamlet is occuipied with all of my past "interesting" PC'sand NPC's. Also, a few of my old gaming group characters!
What I'll do for my campaign, is use the new FR materials being launched, but picking and choosing what I'd like to have my players discover. If through group play I discover a particular "thing' they wish to explore or discover, I can create it as necessary.
Anyways, there has been some great posts on this thread! Thanks to everyone!

| #37DreamstryderAug 04, 2014 1:43:55 | I'm continuing with a homebrew setting from previous editions. It's science-fantasy on a rustic alien planet, possibly post-apocalyptic: ruined Grecian temples, alien parasites, machines that work like magic, dinosaurs, mutant forests, hovercrafts, fungused-over technological towers, sky knights. I made it so the players (and I!) would always look forward to what happens next.
My D&D activity when not playing is to mulling over ideas for other homebrew settings, too. I usually find nothing in published setting books to use, like they operate on a different aesthetic track from my taste. *shrugs* Worth a glance, tho', considering the new edition's focus on inspiring story. |

It just occurred to me that the first adventure is presumably launching Friday, as well. That would likely be the source of much monster content for the Basic Rules update. Duh. |
