This may seem like a base question, but no matter how many times i read through the players handbook, moster manul, and dungeons masters guide, i cant figure out how the base rules say to give xp.

ive tried multiple meathods so far .

all pc get total amount of xp in the encounter, this resulted in them leveling to fast

each getting xp based off what they killed, this resulted in the palidin and figher out leveling the wizard and rouge

what I now belive you are supposed to do is give each party member a 1/5 of the total xp in the encounter (assuming there are 5 pc's)

but no matter how hard i try, i can not find how the books say you are supposed to do it, so i am asking here

It's easier than it looks.

1) Enemies give a certain amount of XP each based on their Challenge (Challenge on page 9 of the Monster Manual).

2) An encounter is worth the total amount of XP from each monster (Step 3 on page 82 of the Dungeon Master's Guide).

3) The difficulty of an encounter is estimated by the total amount of XP times a multiplier based on the total number of enemies (Step 4 on page 82 of the Dungeon Master's Guide) and based on the number of members in the party (Party Size on page 83 of the same).

4) PCs earn an equal share of the total amount of XP (Experience Points on page 260 of the Dungeon Master's Guide), not the modified difficulty XP (Step 4 on page 82 of the Dungeon Master's Guide).

Easy peasy.

It's easy: you divide the amount of xp earned by the # of players.

If you look up "XP" in the DMG index, it directs you to p.260 where it says "Each monster has an XP value based on its challenge rating. When adventurers defeat one or more monsters ... they divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves."

If 5 adventurers defeat 6 goblins, each goblin is worth 50XP so 6 goblins are worth 6x50 = 300XP. The 5 adventurers divide the 300XP evenly amongst themselves, so they each get 300/5 = 60XP.

It doesn't matter who defeats which monster - all characters in the party get the same XP award regardless. This is to encourage team-play. It avoids players competing with each other for XP or arguments over who should get the XP if several of them hit the same monster and weaken it before the final blow kills it.

huh, I didnt realize this wasnt in the phb somewhere. Not that big of a deal. But it being so hard to find in the dmg is actually a little upsetting. I dont own the dmg yet though. anyways.

This actually confused me quite a bit at first too. I only figured it out by seeing other people doing it that way (it was before the DMG).
