Good world to start with?

Just some obligatory background.

I started playing D&D back in the late 70s and had a blast with it. In fact, I still have my original dice too. Then came Advanced D&D and later on some 3rd edition.

Not too long ago I ran into a guy in a local brewpub with a T-shirt that said "Geek shirt -4 Cha". I made a comment on it and we started chatting about D&D and he explained how 4th edition was terrible and how good 5th edition was. My wife and I got rid of cable and satellite TV a while back and were looking at things to do in the evenings, so I brought up starting a 5th edition game. She'd played before and our grown up son and some friends jumped on board and we now have a regular weekly game night.

The first session or 2 were us all becoming familiar with the race abilites, class dynamics, basic rules and general game play flow more than any story arc. It's a lot to take in and make sense of but I must say that I do like how 5e meshes together.

Back in the adv D&D days, our game was set in the forgotten realms. For our games, I started with a local map where the PCs met up and started their journey together. It is all nondescript enough that I can embed that into any world. I am leaning toward the forgotten realms world as there are some large JPGs out there that I can print out for the characters to use as a reference as they go forth in the world. Are there any other D&D based worlds that might be better considered?

Thanks for all of the posts up here to date. There is a lot of good information to be had.

If you’re already familiar with the Realms, I’d say go with that. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a setting you can easily insert a homebrewed local area into, Greyhawk springs to mind. It’s also got a much more old-school gaming feel to it.

If you are cool with the Realms, I would just stick with that. All of the current official adventures are set there, and there is a sourcebook for it coming out in a few months. It's the only setting supported by official material at this point, so you can't really go wrong there.

Very good write up. I might just take a look at Eberron as well.

Thanks to all.

I've always DMed home campaigns in my own world, but I would make one suggestion.

If you decide to use a published world, make sure people understand that it is your world and that it's merely based on the published material.  If you printed it all out, you would literally have tons of material to sort through on the forgotten realms.  You may run into people that will want to "correct" you, particularly if you use an established character.

I've also used adventure material and campaign books from most settings at one time or other.  I just tweak the names and geography to fit my own personal map.

So my suggestion?  Create your own world.  Start small, build out as needed.  If you want a map and don't want to draw up your own, google for forgotten realms map or similar and go from there.

In any case, welcome back and have fun!
