Half Troll and "Ponytaur" Races

So, I like to create races for games, even if the players aren't always interested, but now I have a player who wants to see more monstrous type races available, and I've been inspired to make the above mentioned races. I'd really like some suggestions and critiques, if you may! (I had some fun with naming these traits)

Half-Troll

+2 Constituion, +1 Strength

Medium size, Darkvision 60', Movement 30'

Big Nose:  You gain proficiency in the Perception skill.

Trollish Durability: Your hit point maximum is increased by 1, and increases by an additional 1 each time you level.

Diehard: While your troll blood does not provide you with regeneration on par of your relative, it often manages to save your hide at the worst of times, bringing you back from the brink of death. You have advantage on death saving throws.

Normally I would agree that advantage on death saves doesn't make sense, but trolls literally regenerate from giblets, so I feel like it could be an exception.

Ponytaur

+2 Strength, +1 Dex

Medium, Movement speed 40'

Know Common, Elvish, and Sylvan

Small Arms – Disadvantage when using weapons with the Heavy tag.

Strangely Aware: You gain proficiency in the Perception skill.

Centaur Weapon Training: You gain proficiency in spears, shortbows, shortswords, and longswords.

My Own Mount – You can wield a lance in one hand as if mounted. You also cannot ride most mounts due to this unique anatomy (DM discretion).

One of my players has been interested in being a Centaur, but being Large and with 50' base speed seems pretty insane, so I thought "how can I remedy this"? By being a pony-sized Centaur of course! Ponytaurs are essentially halflings torsos on pony bodies, whereas a centaur is more of an elf or a human on a full grown horse's.

Heh, the ponytaur concept is pretty clever.

Thanks. I thought it was pretty clever, myself. I feel that 1d6 damage might be too much at lower levels as a bonus. Maybe not, though. +2 seems more reasonable to me.

Ponytaur seems somewhat overpowered (Centaurs themselves are decently powerful minus AC).  The 40 speed is a pretty huge advantage, and even Ferocious Charge and starting with three languages as opposed to two.  I tend to want to "underwhelm" with homebrew races as players will need to make a choice if they really want to play that race for RP purposes (as opposed to be really OP).  These are "ponies" after all, and not full scale Centaurs, and whether they should ever grow into full scale centaurs with full centaur powers or not should be something you as a GM need to consider.

Personally, I would give Ponytaurs the following...

+2 STR (no Dex bonus, as by looking at the Centaur statline).
Medium sized, Spd 40
Language: Common and either Elven or Sylvan

I would remove Small Arms (it doesn't make sense to me why they would have this unless their upper torsos were like halfling size or they had T-Rex arms).
I would remove Proficiency in Perception
I would add Long Bow to Centaur Weapons as, err, Centaurs are equipped with Long Bows.
I may add Hooves as unarmed attack at d4 bludgeoning natural weapons.

Perhaps Furious Charge (with a bonus d6 damage) could become a feat, that increases in damage as the character increases in levels (like 2d6 at lv11, etc.).

I also would consider Centaur "armor" as Barding and increase the cost for armoring the centaur (minus shield).

Just my two cents...

They indeed have halfling type bodies on top of their pony lower halfs. Otherwise their front end would be massively overweighted, not to mention oversized, don't you think? That's how I'm imagining them, anyways. Maybe logistically it doesn't actually make sense, but that's how they get around being Medium instead of Large.

Ferocious Charge might be better off as a feat, but then I don't know what else what to give the race, because then I feel like they would be missing something. Much like how I'm feeling with Half-Trolls.

So they DO have halfling bodies...lol.  So do Ponytaurs grow up into Centaurs, or are they the halfling/small creature versions of centaurs and won't ever really grow to Centaur size?  If the latter, then I can see the whole "small arms" thing, as they are just smaller cuter versions that don't benefit a lot from Heavy weapons which thus eliminates Long Bow and "Pikes/most Polearms" as viable Centaurs weapons.  Fine.  Their cuteness wins there...  =)

Yeah, they are miniature versions of centaurs, and don't grow up to be them.

I do agree that half-trolls are fairly good as-is, just that they don't provide much. I think relentless would be overkill on top of everything. So I guess how it is now will work. As for ponytaurs, I guess without charge they could still be fitting for their race, and if they want to be chargers befitting their race, they can take the feat.
