Hello everyone, I would like to try something new and so I decided to go with a Horror themed campaign once my current one is over.  I have never really done horror in my games and making a scary or horror-like atmoshere just seems really difficult to me.  So i was wondering if anyone has any tips?

So far I do not have the story down yet, but it will involve a King's quest for immortality, which leads to wanting to become a vampire, which leads to Stahd Von Zarovich.  So a bit of Ravenloft for the nastalgia.  But wait, under all this is another power, the one who lead the king to the vampire is orchestrating all of this for his own devious dreams of power.

I plan on the players being part of the City Guard or one who the Guards consult with for investigations, kind of a harry dresdan type beginnig.

The game will start off in a large city, with mostly Urban style encounters.  They will also adventure into the surounding woods, ShadowFell, Castle Ravenloft, and of course other places once I get everything sorted out.

So if anyone has any tips or advice on how to give the game a more horror like atmosphere and an overall feeling of "dread" let me know!

There was an interesting thread a while ago that was talking about mechanics (here). There was some interesting discussion about mechanics, but also the reasoning behind the mechanics were interesting as well.
