I have a player that came to me with a character concept for a Gnoll PC that I'd like to see them workout. He wants to make a Gnoll Barbarian/Monk multiclassed character that uses a Halberd/naginata like weapon. I'm still new to DMing and 5e, so when I look at the generic gnoll in the MM, I'm thinking a straight conversion might work, but without more experience I'm worried I'm overlooking somethings that will come up to cause trouble later. What are your thoughts on this and how would you approach it?

What I did was give them +2 str +1 dex, 1d6 unarmed piercing (not finesse), prof with handaxes spears and something else, light armor and hide armor, and a variant of their ability in the mm which uses their reaction on a kill immediately to either make an unarmed attack or move half their speed. Recharges on a short rest. Have not gotten to playtest this so your mileage may vary.

There's stats for the race in the DMG, though, I'd say just remove the -2 Int and they'll be PC balanced. A lot of the monster races are actually weaker than PC races listed in the PHB.

I made it a reaction specifically because it already tied into what other classes could do as a bonus action, and I don't think a race ahould step on toes unless the ability can stack (such as with the half orc)

Great feedback here, thanks everyone I'm feeling more confident in allowing this character!

This is what I had written, now that I can get to it.

Gnoll

Ability Increase: +2 Strength, +1 Dexterity

Medium, 30 ft movement, Darkvision: 60ft

Knows Common, Abyssal, and Gnoll

Gnoll Weapon Training: Training with spears, clubs, handaxes, light armor and hide armor

Bite: Proficient in an unarmed attack that deals 1d4 piercing damage.

Rampage: When you drop a creature to 0 HP with an attack, you may use your reaction to move up to your speed without provoking attacks of opportunity, or make an unarmed attack on a creature within range. When you have used this ability, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
