Perception can no longer be rolled as an active check. There is now only Passive Perception. If you want to find something, like a secret door, that you haven't already noticed through Perception, then you must use Investigate.

Perception is now calculated as the total bonus from all your ability scores. It is not added to 10. The total ability score modifier count is the end result for your Passive Perception score. A character with a Standard Array would, therefore, have a Passive Perception of 6.

Passive Perception is, however, still something you can be proficient in, like a skill. This allows you to add your Proficiency bonus to your Passive Perception score.

Do your hidden monsters rolls and hidden traps and secret doors have a different scale of number (rather than standard DCs) to compare to this new Perception number? What benefits does this change give you?

So high Charisma makes you better at noticing secret doors? I don't buy that.

So if we assume that everyone roughly gets the same total value from his or her stat generation, we must conclude everyone is equally perceptive before proficiency. Everyone also increases his or her perceptiveness more or less equally as they level up. Perception is some sort of gestalt quality derived from the whole of all your qualities - this works fine for something like Void in L5R, but it makes no sense for something like how observant you are as a D&D character.
