#1 Redbeard2 Feb 10, 2015 5:42:36	I've been looking around on the forums and have gone through the 5e books several times and can't find a reference for how much NPC's should be charging players for spell casting services.  Any help out there?   Cheers, Redbeard2
#2 iserith Feb 10, 2015 5:48:16	For 1st or 2nd-level spells, it's 10 to 50 gp plus the cost of material components. For higher-level spells, the spellcaster will typically take payment in the form of services (read: quests) performed by the PCs. This is from Basic Rules, page 54.
#3 Dark_Stryke Feb 10, 2015 7:24:50	I've been using the price of a scroll of the spell's level (as taken from the scroll rarity table in the DMG, and using the prices listed, eg, 50gp for a common item, 500gp for an uncommon, etc), and adjusting upwards or downwards based on the risk posed to the caster, ease of casting, and the like. A 3rd level scroll is considered an uncommon item, so an NPC spellcaster will charge 500gp for casting a 3rd level spell. They may charge less if the circumstances are particularly favorable to them (like they have the spell prepared already and just have to cast it then and there), or more if there is significant risk involved ("Hey, wanna come to the dungeon and cast Daylight as part of this ritual we're performing to banish the Shadow Demons?" "...Sure. But it'll cost ya.")
#4 bawylie Feb 10, 2015 10:26:41	If the spell they want is incidental to the the goal they're chasing - cheap.    If the spell they want is instrumental to the goal they're chasing - ridiculously expensive.

And big cities in FR i can see that as well, but in most of my setting, even having low level magic (5e levels 1-3) could easily get you a position in nobles house holds, and plenty of ways of making money. Public spell casting I tend to see as very rare happenings.
