| #1WanderingBardJul 26, 2015 1:37:02 | Okay so I usually don't use XP in my DnD sessions but I wanted to try it. However, I quickly realized why I shied away from it in the first place. The rules seem so...convoluted. Can anyone help me with this? I'm confused on how much XP a player party should have. The Adventuring Day XP Table says a level 5 party should get 3500 XP per day per Character. That means in a party of 5 the total amount of XP encounters I have to fit in will be a staggering 17500 XP worth of encounters. The DM book says this is around 8 medium encounters or fewer hard encounters. Now correct me if i'm wrong but I don't see how its possible to fill that 17500 XP budget without making every encounter a Deadly difficulty encounter. Considering how XP and difficulty work, I find it hard to justify trying to reach the 3500 exp per day criteria. For example, 3 Lizardmen and 1 Giant Lizard give a total of 350 exp and have a difficulty of 700 XP. That is considered a medium to hard difficulty encounter for a party of level 5. But 8 of those medium encounters only gives me 2800. Not only is that not 17500, the budget the book recommends, but its not even 3500 XP which the book seems to be recommending PER CHARACTER... I also considered if the difficulty XP is what the table was referring too (which confuses me because players dont recieve the difficulty XP rather its just a measuring tool for difficulty), and 8 x 700 = 5600...not even close to the 17500 mark. So can someone please explain to me how the adventuring day XP table makes any sense? And if not, how much XP should I be giving my party in 8 or so medium encounters with 2 short rests before a long rest. |

That would be something like 5 lizardfolk, a lizardfolk shaman, and its pet giant lizard. It would take 7 such encounters to bring the party to 17,500 adjusted XP in an adventuring day. |

So I've started doing this and my players love it.
Essentially it's a deck of cards and each card has a quest redeemable for some amount of XP (1 to 3 or so). Players need 5 + N XP to level up (where N = the level they're trying to get, so a 1st level character needs 7XP to reach level 2).
when a quest is completed they put it back in the deck and draw again. Anyway, it's crazy fun. |
