I introduced aliens into are D&D HotDQ campaign. were playing through episode 4 and they are on the road to Waterdeep. I made a random encounter with a crashed UFO. As the players went to investigate, five grimlocks in shiny body suits (AC 11, resistance radiant damage) with laser pistols and stun batons (1d4 bludgeon+ 1d4 force damage; on a crit. target save v. con 12 or be stunned for 1d4 rounds; explodes on a fumble 2d4 force damage), three intellect devourers and mind flayer in shiny breast plate (resistance to radiant damage) and . I DMed poorly it wasn't the challenge it should have been, I was tired and stressed from work, ended session early. Ill make it up in another UFO encounter. In short my players have 5 laser pistols, 5 stun batons and 5 stinky shiny suites. The mind flayer plane shifted away.

The lasers pistols use the rules in the DMG pg. 268, except they will blow up (3d6 force and radiant damage) on a fumble roll.

I think they are going to be overpowered for a while until the laser pistols' power runs out or they explode..

Oh they also made friends with "Pop-pop" a githzerai monk in a silver body suit with a laser rifle, the only survivor of the crashed UFO. Pop-pop has joined Locke's Slayers and  their quest for now.

Very cool. Yeah, those will be a bit overpowered, but the risks and limited charges balance that out. Do the PCs know they’re limited-use items?

I keep wanting to run a full on Sword and Planet D&D campaign, with lasers, space wizards, and alien planets. Maybe next campaign…

Well, the easiest way to de-power them is to simply throw some encounters at the group where using their new found tech will seem to be the optimal choice. Maybe have some witnesses - who'll then spread the word & lead to the party getting job offers/pleas.

Another potential solution is to just adjust the damage down to the same levels you have for bows and crossbows.

Han Solo at Stars' End describes an especially rugged blaster pistol that can survive being owned by somebody who has no idea how to keep it in good shape.  (Han also provides some tactical advice to the purchasers.)  You could have one and only one of the laser guns be this type, the rest require dedicated competent full-time maintenance men to keep in working condition.  Such a weapon would also need a recharger of some sort, probably a solar panel.  For ease of tracking, have it recharge 1d6 uses per day.  The gith will keep this weapon and let the PC try out the fragile ones.

When the Zhent gnome shows up, bring along her little brother, an enthusiast for Gond !  He will be fascinated with the laser and assorted equipment.

I was considering that for my campaign. I think Aliens would very fun for them.

How is 5th edition different from 3.5 e?

5e is built around the idea that an orc is always a challenge you can't ignore for your PCs. So a level 1 orc has a chance to hit you in melee at any level. EX the highest AC's I've seen are topping out around the low 30's. Instead, things have more HP, and do less damage than 3.5. Less save or die spells, now its save or lose HP. Less class/prestige class options, less variant rules, and less multiclassing.

I would lose the crit bonus on the batons. Just have them save vs con (DC 10) on a hit to be stunned. Optionally the effect could be (DC12) have disadvantage on their attack rolls until the end of the creatures next turn. 1d4 rounds seems excessive on top of double damage. Having someone able to do nothing for four rounds kinda kills the fun for a player.
