Leveling up monsters

Hi Guys,

I'm currently converting X2 - Castle Amber for my 5e game.

The original is meant for 3 - 6 lvl players and my group is currently level 5, a lot of the encounters are a little light which is fine for a few fights, easy wins can be interesting and keep the game moving. But I'd like some way to beef up other encounters.

I'm pulling a few monsters from the MM and some from the Playtest stuff (Rakasta as an example) and for others I'm using Stan Shins converstion tool here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?356857-DnD-1e-to-5e-Conversion-Tool

Although I just found this so I'll give that a go as well: http://brentnewhall.com/games/1e5e.html

My initial idea for upgrading some of the monsters is to just ignore the math and say "well you have a +4 to hit at the moment but I'll up that to +8, raise your damage randomly as well and give you more hit points" but I'd really like it if someone had a convenient algorithm I could use to upp monster levels.

Cheers

What I did the last time I had to convert a module that was a lower level was just pick all-new monsters. I made sure they were close to what was listed in the module, i.e. replacing an ogre with a hill giant. I found it to be much easier, preventing the double-work of converting the monster and then upscaling its challenge rating.

take a look at the damage and hp expressons on the DMG monster table. HP increases by 15 per level, and damage increases by 6 per level. At certain levels, attack bonus and AC go up. So if you want to quickly level up a monster, just up its HP by 15 and increase its damage per round by 6 (6 for one attack, 3 for two, 2 for three, or you can work it into a limited attack like a breath weapon).

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.

I haven't had time to plunge into the DMG much, will have to sit down and read it fully when I get the chance
