Limits of Charm in 5E

So, I'm mostly a 2E Player/GM returning to the game with 5E.

Last night the adventure had a vampire with charm in it  (HotDQ chapter 8).

It used to be that a charm was pretty much mind control but there is some suggestion in the rules now that its less strong, more like a hypnotic suggestion.  This may come up again as they picked up an evil aligned sword and the DMG says that when a sentient item takes control its "like a charm spell."

SO what are the limits on charm these days?  Could the sword have the player turn and attack his or her own party members, for instance?

BUT neither of those seem to relate to a sentient item that has taken control.

Which makes this nonsensical....

DMG Page 216

"On a failed save, the weilder is charmed by the item for 1D12 hours. While charmed the wielder must try to follow the item's commands."

SO is this actually NOT a charm effect, but a "mind control" effect? And thus can the item issue any command that serves it purpose, including attacking

the players' friends?

As I said, some effects specify that they are more than a normal charm - such as how that one says "While charmed the wielder must try to follow the item's commands."

That phrase means that the effect does allow the item to tell the character what to do, and the character must try to do as commanded.

Ah thanks.  I just wanted to be sure I was clear on that.

Sorry for my confusion.
