x-post from reddit

My group of three players will be running through Wave Echo Cave shortly. After overcoming Mormesk the Wraith in room 14, I hope they will discover the map sew into the cover of a histor book (p.47 LMOP DM book)

I plan for it to be an older account (50-300+ years old) of some civilization, event, cataclysm, or something awesome being at, or around, Mount Hotenow.

I've chosen this location because "...thirty years ago, the eruption of Mount Hotenow ... devastated Thundertree. In th ewake of the natural disaster, a plague of strange zombies swept over the area, killin gor driving off those who survived the eruption" (p30). Ideally, the something will only have become revealed due to the eruption and no one has been able to explore the area since.

I would like your help to brainstorm awesome ideas for their next dungeon dive under or around Mount Hotenow.

Ideas that I've thought up so far:

  • Necromancer has set up camp and is responsible for the undead that overran Thundertree
  • Lost civilization buried by previous eruption now accessible again (Pompeii-ish)
  • RIft to another dimension opened and spilling out undead creatures
  • Tomb/prison of a big bad monster/guy that is now breaking free again
  • Schematics showing how to harness volcanic activity for magical rituals. Map shows ritual sites and references materials needed

Also, if any of the existing pre-generated campaigns could fit into this type of scenario, I would love to learn about those too.

Thanks for your thoughts and I look forward to brainstorming with you!

I like #1, 2 & 5

You could tie in #1 with the Necromancer at Old Owl Well somehow... tho' the time-line would need some fudging.  The Necromancer at Old Owl well could be an underling tasked with finding some artifact and returning to the ruins at Thundertree

#2 appeals to my interest in ancient history and archaeology.  It also is very open-ended as to what has taken up residence in the ruins - a good old fasioned dungeon crawl.  Heck why not combine it with the Necromancer idea...?

#5 could be a lot of fun too - lots of elemental magic/summoning.  I lack any creative ideas at the moment though

What level will they be when you finish?  I had my players transition to the new Apocolypse campaign.  There are actual hooks inside the campaign that assume your players just finished Lost Mines.  My players were level 4 and it transitioned nicely.  I left out some of the starter adventures in the module that are for new level one chars.  But there are lots of locations and dungeons your map could lead to.
