Hi All.

I intend to create a new magic item (which can be in a form of a shield or ring) that can cause damage to attacker when the latter hit the one wearing the magic item.

Is there any spells that has similar effect for me to base on? If not, any suggestion? I am thinking that the damage that 'reflect' back to the attacker should only be of minor severity, eg 1d4 or so, to serve as a deterence to the attacker, or as a minor trinket for a lucky player to glee upon.

Thanks.

Armor of agathys is a good place to start

A recharging Armor of Agathys would make a good "spiky" sci-fi shield item.

Also, the tempest domain gives a cleric an ability to fry an attacker with lightning when hit. You could look at that, too.

How about the warlock's Hellish Rebuke? Level 1 spell, does 2d10 fire damage on a failed save, half that on a success. You can modify it to deal less damage if you want.

Boomerang of Returning isn't quite what you are looking for, but you can give one to your enemy as a gift.

Roll to hit the target.  If you miss, compare your to-hit roll against the AC of every creature within 5 feet of the straight-line path between the target and you, in order.  If it misses every other potential target, it automatically hits YOU.  1d6 Bludgeoning.

This is a cursed magic item, but if the previous owner was high-DEX or a sharpshooter, he won't know about the "cursed" part.

Mirror shield.  Like in Perseus and the Medusa.  Works against Gaze attacks or anything that requires straight-line-of-sight (for instance a laser, possibly lightning bolts).
