I am looking for a map of the world if there is such a thing. spacificly what I need to know is how long would it take to travel by caravan from Harkenwold to the Dessarian Valley? Which direction would my adventures be taking. Portals are not an option since they would require magic and such a thing is punishable by death under the current Kings rule. hope to hear back soon.

Thank You,

There is no singular "the world" in D&D. Those places are in Faerun, so look for "Faerun world map" and you'll get what you want. Be advised that editions change the map in that setting fairly often, there is no singular king in that setting, and making Magic illegal is impossible. (Edit: I think you're actually playing in a custom world with place names pulled from Faerun, in which case you should ask your DM. There are no maps of custom worlds except what the DM puts dowb.)

Harkenwold is in the Nentir Vale, 4e's pseudo-setting, while the Dessarin Valley is located on the Sword Coast of Faerûn in the Forgotten Realms.

Unless your DM has placed them in the same world, you'd *have* to use a magic portal to go from one to the other.

Thank you for the responses, I am the GM but still new to the game, and although I am customizing my campaign I still wanted it to be somewhat accurate to the settings.  Sounds to me like they will need to take a boat to reach their destination, I will look into this and I think it will work nicely into my campaign.

Thank You all,

I gotta say, making magic illegal really doesn't fit very well in D&D.  It's a very "high-magic" game.  It could be done, but you're going to want a lot more experience running the game, as well as modifying the rules.  It's assumed the characters will have ready access to magic of all sorts, and taking that away will mess with the balance.

The Harkenwold is in the Nentir Vale, which is a "Points of Light" generic setting meant to mesh into most worlds, be it Faerun, Eberron, Krynn or homebrew. It's not that Harkenwold and the Desserain Valley don't exist in the same reality, it's that the Nentir Vale doesn't exist at all until a DM plugs into another setting.

Thus, the distance between Harkenwold and the Desserain Valley is exactly as long or short as you need it to be. If you're looking for suggestions, I'd probably place it in the vicinity of the Neverwinter Wood, making for a 200-400 mile trek between.

Also, you can do whatever you want with lore, locations, and the status of magic in your game. Just be aware that part of the benefit of running games in pre-made locations is the wealth of information available to players to build their characters. Make it clear that you're not running canon, including how people (and the law) regard magic.

Also also, take the time to ask yourself what you're really trying to accomplish by outlawing magic. While it may speak to you as a DM trying to create a logical perspective of the world's denizens  (i.e. magic can be a very dangerous weapon, so it must be tightly controlled with laws and regulations), it's generally not very fun for players.

Outlawing magic basically makes sure that high-powered monsters CANNOT be fended off by the riff-raff (read: anybody not the King's personal friends) - likely including the PCs.

In my experience, at 5th level you NEED access to Fireball &c to deal with the likely opponents.  My HotDQ group regularly got creamed until we persuaded our Wizard to use one (or even two) spell slot per battle.  Previous to this, he kept saving them until he REALLY needed the firepower.

Perhaps I need to clarify somethings. I haven't removed magic from the game, not that it hasn't been suggested to be done during the forgotten realms campaigns.  Rather magic use is punishable by death by order of the king. If a PC wishes to make a char that possess magic or uses magic they can. They just run the risk of being executed. If they can come up with a way to cast their spells or use their magic abilities in a way that would go unnoticed such as a healer alchemist using arcane magic to enhance his potions when no one was looking would be unharmed but say a raid was done on his living quarters and a spell book or magical item is found in his position then he could be put to death by the kings decree.

Now as for the question at hand regarding where Harkenwold is in relationship to the Dessarian Valley. I thank you all for your input yes this is more of a homebrew game. What campaign really isn’t? Yes I am a new GM that’s why I asked my question in the forum. Your answers have been quite enlightened and the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) is as the GM it’s up to me as to how where or when I put my campaign settings. I asked since I was unable to find a map that clearly showed where one was to the other. Now from your posts I understand that they exist in separate plane or worlds or realms of existence. There for giving me the choices as to do. Do I place it in the land as I choose, does my party conger a portal to take them to the other realm thus a violation to the kings decree. (Which btw 3/5 are LG), or do they foil a ritual and follow the enemy back through a portal they created. Perhaps since Harkenwold is a place of its own I simply make it an island and could send my PC’s on an adventure across the sea where they could go through a “Bermuda triangle” and end up coming to port at Rivergard Keep.

In Closing, I want to thank each one of you for your comments and inputs they have been very helpful, and given me a multitude of ways I can cross over from the Revers of Harkenwold to Princes of the Apocalypse or any other campaign setting on the Swords Coast.
