Monster stench, ghouls/troglodytes/etc

Is the area effect of Stench that some monsters have, like ghouls and troglodytes, still active after they die? For now, I'm saying yes, though perhaps a DM would rule that their being on the ground, and thus below 'nose level' could negate it.

Would you rule that in strong wind, the effect is diminished (saving throw advantage?) or negated entirely?

I would rule that the stench remains until the body decomposes past the point of stinking anymore (which varies depending on local conditions, but could be just a few days) - though I'd also be surprised if that really matters at all, since the stench ability has a built in temporary immunity once you make a successful save so any character needing to perform a specific task right next to the stinking corpse could "get used to the smell" before proceeding.

Given that the stench is only a 5' effect, not the much larger effect it could be judging by my experience of skunks in the real world, I'd not make the effect any easier to resist short of a character being entirely without sense of smell - but I am not opposed to ruling the stench having a larger area of effect under the right circumstances, such as filling an entire tomb that serves as a shared nest for multiple ghasts, or permeating a cave system that functions as a troglodyte city of sorts.
