Need help with Temple of Elemental Evil

I'm planning on running a condensed version of the Temple of Elemental Evil for 5E, but I don't want to use the ToEE modules as written because they're too long and bloated.  I'm currently running the Village of Hommlet and plan to go to ToEE next.  

 

What I need help with is determining the core elements of that story so I can write a shorter adventure that still captures the essence of the original module.  

 

So, anyone out there that has either run or played through the ToEE, please summarize what you believe to be the core elements of that adventure.
