My players are currently in the middle of the PotA campaign and are starting to aquire a bit of loot.  They each are carrying about 400 to 800 in assorted gold and silver coins. They all have various gems, and a few trinkets and a few extra weapons.  It's starting to get to be a bit much for them.  They also have a delivery of their 1st Lost Mine share about to arrive in Red Larch for them, and it is going to amount to another 250 GP each.

I've had a caravan run through Red Larch already and the Fighter upgraded his armor. but even with resupplying they have a lot left, so they are asking about where they could "Bank".  I don't want to have to have them go all the way back to Waterdeep or any huge distance to drop off the gold.  What are the different ways they can either safely store, or even get credit for their gold?  I'm not sure Red Larch can absorb the amount of loot they have.  I'm looking for options that are realistic for the Forgotten realms. I hope that makes sense.

bag of holding is your best friend for carrying lots of small things

it costs about 500gp as an uncommon item, but you could probably sell them for as low as 250

it really depends on how magic your world is.

Promissary notes. Hand over your gold to a wide-ranging noble, merchant of repute or guild, and get a signed note that states how much you are owed. At a later date exchange that for goods at some other location that they operate in.

A letter of credit. I like that.

Encourage them to buy property or start a guild, or sink more money into the mine for an extra 10% profit.

Everyone knows you bury your treasure, create an obscure treasure map so you can find it later.

the dozen pcs in our HotDQ have two large treasure stashes. One is located in one noble pc's uncle's manor house in Waterdeep. The other stash is buried in the Mere of Dead men near the Cartnath House. So far they do not have a bag of holding or a portable hole.

Easy solution: have a merchant going to Waterdeep who will write an IOU; he can place their physical coins in the Bank of Waterdeep.  The PC then only has to worry about carrying the piece of paper somewhere that it will not be stolen nor blow away nor get wet or muddy or toasted.

Anything mentioned above works too.  If the point is just to not have to worry, add a branch of the Bank of Waterdeep in every small town.

Thanks everyone.  Those are some good ideas to work on.

I just let the PCs buy and sell gems at face value. Then its easy to have a jeweler in every town

I have been letting them know the face value of the gems they find and they record that in their inventory.  But when they sell or trade the gems, depending where they are, they don't always get that same value.  Sometimes more, sometimes less.  i mean when they visit a small inn on the road, the innkeeper may very well give them full room and board in his best rooms with meals for a week for that 10 gp amythest.  But a merchant caravan on the road is going to try to shortchange them as much as he's willing to risk to buy their 200 gp ruby.  A charisma check could get the merchant to up his price, but when the bargain is struck, it's done.  My players like a little haggling and understand my rules with their gems.  But converting some of their coins to smaller items like gems is a good idea too.

The PC's should have some sort of background.... families, friends, former associates.

One option would be to leave the valuables with a relative (non-adventuring brother, sister, parent).

A PC with a Military background might have a trusted senior officer who could hold onto loot for them.

Was the PC a member of a guild of any sort? They might have a guild stronghold for keeping members' valuables safe.

An old standby is to have a religious temple double as a 'bank' of sorts... the Clerics holding onto a devotee's valuables in return for a tithe.

I purposely try to keep my settings 'cash poor'. A single gold piece would be small fortune for a farming family. I use silver pennies (like a dime) as the standard medium denomination coin, and most mundane goods and services are available at the cost of a few coppers.
