So I'm running a game and the PCs are 4th level and in the beginning of an evolving campaign. At the beginning of the campaign I asked the players to agree on a group motive that brought them together and presented them with options to choose from that would've brought them together. I even allowed them to make up their own if they wanted to do that. They ended up choosing one of my ideas and decided that they were all being hunted by assassins but they didn't know why. They all found out this information via an NPC who was attacked by an assassin. He brought them together when he found their names along with his on the scroll that an assassin had. The npc had killed the assassin and found the note.

This is story is slowly opening up and now I am bringing in a new player. Anyone have any good ideas for motive that would allow this guy to join up?

Normally I make the new PCs story-involved characters. Often they bring information or asking the PCs for services and first the party-making is more or less for mutual benefit. In your case, the new PC might be somehow connected to the assassins, maybe he has suffered from them in the past and now he found a hide-out, but going there alone? Suicide! And if you put a hook afterwards, the character might blend in fine and be part of the group before you know.

I copied this technique from (mostly fantasy) novels. This is a common way to introduce new main characters.

Well, a BBG had to hire the assassins right?  I don't have any creative details at the moment, but the core solution is that the new PC is also an enemy of the same BBG and is looking for allies, and has some additional information that will further the story.

I was recently on this situation with two players.

The current players were in a dungeon already, so what I ended up doing is that the new players found the new PC's kidnapped inside the dungeon and they old players ended up resquing them.

This gave the new players a reason to follow the current party

  • The PC could have been the person who tipped off the NPC to the assassin's attack and now needs the favor returned because the assassin are on his trail.
  • Another person who's name was on the scroll that the NPC thought was dead. That has information about the assassin that brings him into contact with the PCs.
  • A family member of one of the people on the scroll that is looking for avenge/protect that person. They seek out the PC because they are the best way to reach their end.
