I'm working on some setting rules for a campaign set in Norrath, the world of Everquest (pre-Kunark for those familiar). Naturally, this will include some race/class restrictions that reflect the original game. I also needed to create a couple of custom races (namely the Barbarian and Erudite). Take a look at these and see if they're in line with the other available races.

"Barbarians live in the frigid city of Halas, nestled amidst the icy peaks of Everfrost in Northern Antonica. The city is rather rudimentary, but serves the needs of the Barbarians that call it home."

Barbarian Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age. Barbarians age at the same rate as Humans, though their lifespan tends to be shorter as they more often die in battle than of old age or disease.

Size. Barbarians are somewhat larger and bulkier than Humans, ranging from six-and-a-half to seven feet tall.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Cold Resistance. You only take half damage from cold attacks.

Relentless Endurance. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Slam. When you use the Attack action, you can slam your body into an opponent as a bonus action. You are considered proficient with this attack, and it deals 1d4+Strength modifier damage.

"Unique accomplishments with magic and study have understandably led the Erudites to believe that they are the most intellectually superior race on Norrath. They are known for their serious demeanor."

*NOTE*: To reflect the original game, the Sorcerer is not an available character class for this setting, so this ability shouldn't step on anyone's toes. Additionally, since Erudites are limited to Clerics, Paladins, and Wizards, these abilities will always be useful for them.

Erudite Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age. Erudites age at the same rate as Humans.

Size. Erudites stand between 5 and 6 feet tall on average, but tend to be frail. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Flexible Spellcasting. Erudites manipulate magic on a fundamental level. You gain the flexible spellcasting portion of the Sorcerer’s Font of Magic class ability. You do not gain any sorcery points, but can convert spell slots to sorcery points and vice versa.

Metamagic. Erudites twist spells to suit their needs. At 3rd level, choose two Metamagic options from the Sorcerer’s metamagic class ability. You can choose an additional option at 10th and 17th level. Use your primary casting ability for these options instead of Charisma.

The only problem I see is if an Erudite character chooses a class that doesn't provide spellcasting.  All other races at least have the ability to be any class and still be decent.  An erudite barbarian, monk, or non-magical fighter or rogue would get no benefit from half of their racial traits.  I think perpahs the eridute should be split into two sub-races so that at there would be an option that could be at least half-useful for these classes.
