| #1Jev_RoalJun 17, 2015 17:12:50 | I just started a new campaign (3.5E) and I've got one of the players, a bard, being visited infrequently by a good aligned outsider. The kind really doesn't matter to me at this point, as there isn't any combat involved.
The campaign setting is that there are many "realms" which are all 300 miles by 300 miles in size and which are all seperated by ten mile high walls, that are miles thick. So if the players (or anyone) gets to the top of the wall, the air is basically gone. I've already established this in the game, as the bard tried using an infinate duration levitating device to go up the wall till he was about to pass out.
Question then is.... Can an outsider (such as a Deva) that is normally immune to a bunch of stuff survive in a vacuum? I'd imagine so, but to my knowledge of thirty years of gaming, the question hasn't come up. Naturally I could (and did) just say the outsider was creating air... but if an evil outsider was battling the players on top of the wall and they did "Dispel Magic" at a high enough level, then that outsider could begin suffication pretty rapidly.
Also would they be able to fly? Again I'd imagine so, since they are in the main, magical beings, and not limited by real world physics.
Maybe the Monster Manual says something about vacuum and I have just missed it so far? |

And as for flight, the game does distinguish between physical and magical flight, but it never says which is which. My suggestion is to make a divine "protection from vacuum" spell that only appears on certain servants of whoever made the Realms, or some such. |

If your outsiders are supposed to be native to space, it would be better for them to not need to breathe. They're natives; of course they can survive in their own home. The deva might create air anyway, but that would be for the convenience of the party, not the deva. Obviously, the same would go for cold immunity, pressure resistance, and flight.
On the other hand, if you were planning on revealing that devas are actually native to somewhere else and just visit space, then it would make sense that they would need to cast air spells. In that situation, the players would have every right to kill it with antimagic.
Either way, if the party can get up there on their own, live, and still have the guts to think about combat, they're ready to fight a few outsiders.
That brings up a question. Where did the bard get a space elevator? Not that it's bad, but that's a pretty big hint that you want them to go over the wall. I wouldn't be surprised if your crew is already color coordinating their space suits. |
